Guest guest
Ohhh Bevin! Your post was read!!!! In my state, there is no recylce payment for turning the bottles back in! Dang! I've called a few pubs, but the ones I've called have never heard of the beer! Ok, I'll call more upscale pubs. Thanks for the idea!!!! Grolsch bottles Hi everybody - I posted a message concerning obtaining Grolsch bottles for 10cents each a few weeks ago but no-one responded so maybe I erred in trying to send my message - this time I have a question - have any of you " veteran " brewers out there ever tried using unsulphured Blackstrap Molasses as a substitute for sugar? - as most of you probably know it contains appreciable amounts of many vitamins and minerals and is produced from raw sugar cane which I think can only be beneficial to Kombucha Tea, Looking forward to hearing comments from some of you, Bevin , Niagara Falls, Canada. I already have my bottles. So you went to the recycler and asked if you could look through and find Grolsch bottles? >this time I have a question - have any > of you " veteran " brewers out there ever tried using unsulphured > Blackstrap Molasses as a substitute for sugar? - as most of you > probably know it contains appreciable amounts of many vitamins and > minerals and is produced from raw sugar cane which I think can only be > beneficial to Kombucha Tea, > Looking forward to hearing comments from some of you, > Bevin , Niagara Falls, Canada. It's quite possible to use molasses. Because of the dark syrup and minerals in it, it adds flavors to the KT, and some people don't like it. I use barley malt syrup, also a dark syrup with minerals, but we love it. Go ahead and try it. It's totally ok with the culture. It's just a matter of taste whether you'll like it. --V ~~~ There is no way to peace; peace is the way ~~~~ --A.J. Muste

Muste > Hi - thanks for your response - I will try Blackstrap Molasses with my next brew - as far as the Grolsch bottles are concerned - I live in Ontario, Canada, where you can only buy beer at the Government controlled Beer Stores and you pay a deposit on every bottle you buy - this is where I got the 10 cent bottles - for anyone else interested, putting raw shredded ginger root in each bottle makes for an exceptionally refreshing taste - I use 1 gallon fish bowls bought from the Pet Store - they are ideal. Regards to all, Bevin .

I considered allowing the culture to go a few more days to see if what looked moldy actually grew into mold but decided to follow the advice " when in doubt throw it out " I didn't want to risk contaminating my good culture. Guest guest
Have you checked ebay? I have managed to get 3 dozen real Grolsch bottles that way. I do believe its the strength of the glass as well as the stopper, Ive heard that the look-alikes just arent the same. They would be fine for stuff other than KT. zoe Saturday, March 10, 2007, 5:20:37 AM, you wrote: Hi everyone! I've been searching high and low in the UK for Grolsch bottles without success. However, I have found a UK website that sells bottles with a Grolsch-type stopper at quite a reasonable price. My question is this. Are Grolsch bottles recommended because of the stopper or because of the strength of the glass? Or both? What do you think of these bottles? Here is the link to paste in your browser: http://www.beertech.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index & cPath=35 I've also got a link for a European website if anyone wants it. http://www.ebottles.net Their bottles work out more expensive but I guess this is because of the postage to the UK. Another question please! My neighbour has just started brewing KT (from one of my ex-Margret cultures) and insists on using a large ceramic bread-bin that holds gallons. I've told her that she should really be using glass. Actually I'm really jealous because her's looks lovely with a pretty cloth on top whilst mine is only in a pyrex bowl with a white cloth. Boring! I'm determined to find one of these bins but thought I'd check first if ceramic is OK to use. Blessings to you all!
