You could end up being called into nights and then have to work your scheduled day shift?? We try to switch first, then if nothing else we end up begging to be able to sign up for a second call slot on one day, or just dont sign up then have to do double the next month. sueThe Mays wrote: I am on a committee now at work to try to improve our mandatory on call. Full time people sign up first, parttimers second. We get the huge amount of $1.50 an hour for taking call, but it is paid as time and a half if you are called in. FT and PT take the same number of hours. We go in rotating alphabetical order every month so someone always gets a chance to have a first choice. We take the holes on the schedule, divide the hours by the number of available staff, then split them equally. pool staff is not required to take call, but can fill in the shifts if they want, so its offered to them first to reduce the hours of call required. Then what we call critical pay when we are called in, which is $5.00 on top of hourly and shift diff. We will also be sent home sometime later in the week if possible to avoid overtime. Which really makes you feel like all this is totally for their convenience and none for your own. We do self scheduling and after the schedule is complete, the holes are posted and average hours of on call per person are tallied. We then sign up on a first come/first serve basis. Guest guest Posted March 21, 2004 Report Share Posted March 21, 2004 Our full time and part time staff are required to take call. Full- timers are required to take 12-hour calls 4 times a month. Part- timers take 12-hour calls 2 times a month. We get paid $2.00/hr while taking call. If we get called in, we get paid time and a half. I work Baylor, and when I was first hired I was told I would not have to take call, but, of course, they changed that farther down the road. Our NM posts a blank call schedule each month, and each of us picks the shifts we want to cover. We can pick a call shift immediately before or after a scheduled shift, but technically, we're not supposed to work more than 20 hours consecutively. If someone calls out, though, that leaves the on-call person stuck with working 24 hours. We are definitely not allowed to take call directly between scheduled shifts.(Working a P shift, taking call the following A shift, then working the P shift again.) We are a small unit, and many of us are already working four 12-hour shifts, so possibly having to work a 5th shift because of being on call makes having to take call as pleasant as a Barium Enema.
