Amniotic Fluid Embolism and induction

Saw this on another list. Any nurses have experience with amniotic fluid

embolism?

No, she didn't survive and neither did her baby.

Prostin gel only as they had not started Pitocin.

She was being induced due to short stature and a GP who thought this would

maximise her chances of birthing normally. She had an assisted birth with

baby number one who now has no mother and no sibling.

Just sad, that's all I can say.

Unfortunately, this is why OB is only a happy place to work about 85% of the time. Nothing can prevent an amniotic fluid embolism and it's not malpractice. No one knows why it happens or who is at high risk for it. Very sad when it does happen, though, because it's almost a 100% mortality.
