Guest guest
Someone was asking about specific breeds for milking sheep. I know that there are preferred breeds, but when I had our Dorsets we had several that would rival our first freshening dairy goats. I do know that their lactation isn't as long as the goats and cows, but if you select for heavy milkers with consistant lactations, you ought to be able to improve that trait. I only milked them once when we lost lambs due to a dog attack. The ewes adjusted to being milked, but they still didn't like to hop up on the milkstand. It only lasted a week or two, until we could get them dried off. The other nice thing about the Dorsets was that they would breed out of season. If you timed it properly, you could have a constant supply of milk year round. This would be more difficult with the more seasonal breeders.
