I know how to use " effect " as a verb, but how do you use " affect " as a noun?

I thought the noun form was " affection. "

From Merriam-Webster online:

Main Entry: [1]af·fect

Pronunciation: 'a- " fekt

Function: noun

Etymology: Middle English, from Latin affectus, from afficere

Date: 14th century

1 : obsolete : FEELING, AFFECTION

2 : the conscious subjective aspect of an emotion considered apart from bodily

changes

This is a very common term in psychology, eg, " The lack of affect denoted a

classic sociopathic personality. "

From encarta again:

af·fect [á fèkt]

n

feeling associated with an action: an emotion or mood

associated with an idea or action, or the external

expression of such a feeling

blunted affect
