Guest guest
On Wed, 28 Jan 2004 21:57:59 -0800 (PST) mohamad-nabil hijazi writes: > Dear Dr. Loyd< > > Thank you very much> > But Norcadia itself what does it mean. > > Best Regards > > Mohamad Summarized from Zinsser Microbiology, 20th ed., p. 531-534: Nocardiosis is caused by infection with Nocardia asteroides...sometimes with other Nocardia species...found in nature in soil and aquatic environments, and the bacteria are usually inhaled. More than half people that develop a disease condition from this bacteria are " in some way compromised " . In this regard the text mentions history of steroid use, immunosuppressive therapy, chronic pulmonary infections, cancer, presence of tuberculosis or AIDS, transplant recipients, and alcoholism. If it develops into disease state, it usually begins in the lungs (can mimic TB symptoms), and then can spread into the central nervous system or kidneys. The bacteria seems to have an affinity for the central nervous system, possibly confirming Dr. Loyd's experience with the person having Parkinson's symptoms. The disease process tends to form abscesses. Lida Mattman in her book Cell Wall Deficient Forms (p. 180), describes a case where a wall-deficient form of Nocardia was cultured from a dog that suffered fatal polyarthritis disease, and no other organisms were cultured from the tissues. She also cites the following chapter in a book, particularly in regards to Nocardia association with a case of a fatal brain abscess: Beaman, BL. Nocardiosis: role of the cell wall deficient state of Nocardia. In Cell Wall Deficient Bacteria, Domingue GJ, ed., p. 231-255. -Wesley, 1982.
