Guest guest
DATABASES: FULLTEXT: Elsevier Science Direct Indexed by Google and Google Scholar: Even More News First to review prior posts on this topic. Quoting I posted yesterday [Friday] about this development. DATABASES: SCIENCE ENGINEERING COMPUTER AND TECHNOLOGY : INTERNET: SEARCH: RESOURCES : INTERNET: SEARCH TOOLS AND SERVICES: GOOGLE: Science Direct-ly into Google <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Net-Gold/message/18995> Then curiousity set in. So I went to Google Scholar and searched on the first thing that came to mind in this context, Elsevier. Of course with that search, many entries will be for book citations as Elsevier is among other things a book publisher. End Quote I filed this post regarding my observations in satisfying my curiosity. DATABASES: FULLTEXT: Elsevier Science Direct Indexed by Google and Google Scholar <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Net-Gold/message/19018> This post was done under tight time constraints, so I did not get to check into this matter in greater detail and noticed but did not discuss that the article citation from Cell noted in the message linked immediately above when reached full text using the Science Direct link, also noted in that post, places the noble user directly onto the Science Direct database search interface as a GUEST. The basic Science Direct search box is at the top of the Cell full text article citation, abstract and text. So now that this guest is facing the Science Direct interface head on, lets try a search in Science Direct and see what happens. This search, far more complex than anything one could or would attempt using internet search engines, seeks discussions of injured athletes in terms of attitudes and adherence to their treatment regimens. Search Strategy: athletes and injuries and (treatment or therapy or counseling or therapies) and (morale or attitude or behavior or adherence or psychological) The Science Direct Guest search interface responds with this message and the the eight source citations in this database that match this search strategy. 8 Articles Found TITLE-ABS-KEY (athletes and injuries and (treatment or therapy or counseling or therapies) and (morale or attitude or behavior or adherence or psychological)) Hence this search in Science Direct was enabled by entry into this database from a citation and link found in a Google Scholar citation for the Journal " Cell " and the option of viewing the full text of that article in the Science Direct database from an Elsevier web page resulting from the search hit in Google Scholar that offers either access to the full text of the article in question from the journal Cell or from Science Direct. Here are four of the citations that may be found when the search strategy for athletes and injuries shown above is executed in the Science Direct database. Selected Citations from this Search: Development of an artificial meniscus using polyvinyl alcohol-hydrogel for early return to, and continuance of, athletic life in sportspersons with severe meniscus injury. Elsevier seems instead to be simply making awareness of the sources found in their Science Direct database, if this is an intentional development, more accessible to the users of this interface as to what is available from Elsevier on complex topics searched by guests of Science Direct. In other words, members of institutions that subscribe to Science Direct will no longer be the only folks who learn the contents of Science Direct on a complex or simple topic of interest and learn more about these sources through the abstracts for these journal articles. Elsevier is offering the articles resulting from Guest searches in Science Direct for sale to those searching who need these specific articles as they may also be doing in publically accessible SCIRUS. More about Scirus <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Net-Gold/msearch? query=scirus & amp;submit=Search & charset=windows-1252> A shorter URL for the above link: <http://tinyurl.com/2kh748> This development is added to the extensive monograph coverage by Worldcat to the general public as well as selected articles form the FirstSearch owner of Worldcat via selected sources indexed in FirstSearch database ArticleFirst from the interface at <http://www.worldcat.org> (.) There is also the extensive and growing content within books provided by Google Books. There is an education and a library database both provided by EBSCO at no cost. There is a varying group of databases from several vendors provided to public library members in many states of the United States. A huge and growing collection of scholarly articles and documents are cited in Google Scholar with indication in many cases as to who has cited these works. In quite a few cases in Google Scholar, the full text of the article or some of the citing articles is available to the public by following the links in Google Scholar or by taking the source citation such as the journal name to Worldcat and finding the libraries within ones region that own this publication. The tools facilitating the use of quality research publications by the general public is both extensive and growing, so that learning in depth about a topic or research question is no longer only possible for those affiliated with an organization or college with extensive print, electronic aggregation and electronic database collections. The addition of Elsevier's Science Direct to this group of resources, if this is intended by the publisher and not just a glitch, is a major additional step forward in making tools of learning accessible to the general public.
