(Yes, truly a frightening precedent for all school districts -- perish the

thought of doing what it takes to educate children with autism no matter the

cost.... yes it costs more .... but isn't giving a child the best chance at a

life of independence or semi-independence worth it? This is a perfect example

of instead of appealing decisions and fighting parents -- schools and parents

should together be writing letter after letter after letter to our Federal and

State Governments to fully fund IDEA so the schools have the funds to do what

they need to do....)

Judge: School District Must Reimburse Family For Boy's Special Education

$353,000

From the Associated Press

Denver - An administrative law judge says the School District

must give the parents of a severely autistic Berthoud boy more than 353-thousand

dollars to pay for his education at a Boston residential facility.

Judge Norcross upheld a state hearing officer's ruling in July

that the school district failed to provide an adequate education for

eleven-year-old Luke Perkins.

Jeff and Perkins say their son needs constant supervision to be able

to learn basic life skills, including eating and sleeping property.

Jeff Perkins says that when his son returned from Boston for the summer, his

skills had improved significantly.

officials say the ruling sets a frightening precedent for all

school districts facing special-education costs.

Superintendent Dan says the board likely will discuss early next

week whether to appeal in district court.
