Background: Facial lipoatrophy leads to an important psychological impact on HIV-infected patients. Methods: This is a pilot, open, prospective study in which HIV patients with facial lipoatrophy were distributed to receive infiltrations of autologous fat, polilactic acid and polyacrilamide gel. At baseline (BL) and after infiltrations (AI), patients are assessed in: self-reported adherence to HAART, quality of life with MOS-HIV, depression with BDI questionnaire and emotional status with POMS-A. Results: From the 175 patients included, 80% are men. Ninety-one patients have already received infiltrations. Adherence at BL: 95.5±10.1 vs AI: 98.3±2.8; p=0.05. Quality of life improved in the following domains: Health Perception (BL: 47.8±25.7 vs AI: 62±20.3; p=0.05), Mental Health (BL: 66.08±16.9 vs AI: 72.6±19.8; p=0.03), Transitory Health (BL: 58.6±17.8 vs AI: 64.2±23.4; p=0.03). Emotional Status (total POMS-A score): BL: 8.6±3 vs AI: 2.5±2.4; p<0.001. Depression: BL: 9.6±3 vs AI: 2.5±2.4; p<0.001. No statistically significant differences were observed between treatment groups and sex. Conclusions: After the infiltrations, some quality of life dimensions improved as well as adherence to HAART and emotional status. No depressive symptoms were observed at BL although an improvement was found in BDI data. Reparatory treatment may help to improve psychological status in people with facial lipoatrophyMedGenMed. 2004 Jul 11;6(3):WePeB5930 [eJIAS. 2004 Jul 11;1(1):WePeB5930]
