Hi Alice,

Good for your for giving up your beer! I, too had no problem in giving it up - once that I heard that my liver enzymes were elevated (pre hepc dx) - that was it.

A lot of research these days is suggesting that hypoglycemia plays a big role in recovering alcoholics (or regular drinkers), and can cause stuff like sugar craving and low blood sugar.

Here are a couple of links - one link describes one of the theories that alcoholism (and drug addiction) is tied into food allergies:

Hypoglycemia

"Hypoglycemia (low and variant blood sugar) is a very common problem afflicting recovering alcoholics, and is a primary cause of relapse. Alcoholics with a heavy history of drinking often develop this condition of swinging and crashing blood sugar levels; and when blood sugar levels fall, they experience depressed mood, lethargy, and also cravings for sugar…which for alcoholics means cravings for the sugar in alcohol!"

"There is considerable data that supports the notion that most alcoholics are hypoglycemic. (Larson 92, Airola 77) There is a reciprocal relationship between the two. Chronic drinking just like excessive sugar contributes to the development of hypoglycemia just as people with hypoglycemia are potential candidates for alcoholism. Hypoglycemia can cause irritability, depression, aggressiveness, insomnia, fatigue, restlessness, confusion, a desire to drink and nervousness, many of the same symptoms of an alcoholic. (Larson 92) When an alcoholic gets sober the symptoms listed above continue to plaque them and if hypoglycemia is not addressed these symptoms leave the individual at high risk of relapsing in order to temporarily relieve these symptoms."

Hope this helps!
