Hi Everyone – As we all know the media is having a field day with the contraception issue. I am very proud of the Bishops for taking a stand. Now that the Catholic church has the “microphone”, shouldn’t the Bishops be informing the media about natural family planning too? I’ve hardly heard anything said about it. Maybe I am missing something. All the non-Catholics I have spoken to about this issue think the Catholic church is outdated in its teaching. When I explain that the Church is actually ahead on this issue and approves of highly effective “natural systems” to manage and care for fertility, these same people tell me they had no idea such systems even exist. This is a teachable moment! Don’t you all agree? I just wondered what your thoughts are on this.

It IS a teachable moment and we are trying. Please write your Bishops and Priests and offer help in getting the message out. A lot of times they do not even understand NFP so they can't explain or promote it. We have to offer to help teach them and develop materials for them. Fr , what is the status of this related project, have you any more advice? It is definitely a teachable moment, but we must be careful to phrase the teaching in such a way as to convey the dignity of the body and that NFP is NOT just another “method” of contraception, i.e. Catholic contraception. It is not against life. As we all know and as has been discussed before on this site NFP can be used with a contraceptive mentality. It is great that it is “green” and this can be an entrance to the discussion but it cannot end there. I know the education is a process, but it would be erroneous to let it go at the more secular approach- it is necessary to bring the entire message so that the “lifestyle “ which NFP is can be inculcated into their lifestyle; it cannot just be another method of “natural” family planning.Les Ruppersberger From: nfpprofessionals [mailto:nfpprofessionals ] On Behalf Of Malo, Sent: Tuesday, March 13, 2012 6:29 PMTo: nfpprofessionals Subject: Did I miss something? ,I have only followed what some bishops have written and they are focusing on the religious freedom. Although this is very important and the key point because the administration erosion of this right has serious consequences for a host of other ethical and moral issues, they should also briefly explain what NFP is and what contraception does. It is a teaching moment. Defending religious freedom does not exclude teaching that NFP is good and contraception is wrong because it is harmful.

BUT THEY NEED TO HEAR KNOWLEDGABLE AND EXPERIENCED PHYSICIANS AND NURSES like you. Can we help Theresa N to communicate this to the bishops? Can Helen A. who headed her office be encouraged to speak with key bishops? I am sure or Hanna have done this before and can suggest what would be the best way to proceed or if it is of any use to do something of the sort.

The CMA, and AAPLOG, together with FACTS (and all the NFP groups represented) would give weight to a communication to the head of the USCCB.

In many ways the HHS mandate is a God Send especially from the pulpit and clearly the largerissue is contraception or better the beauty and virtue of conception.  Encourage your priests and pastors to address the matter in their homilies.  Sadly, more often than not I have had parishioners thank me for my life homilies commenting that mine was the first they had heard.  Plant and water the seed.  God will give the growth.
