Guest guest
Dianna, I the case of the shoulder straps...I truly felt that my son could not get his arms in front of his body to brace himself and stop the fall....and if he did...his head wold still hit!! HARD! We too had the backward issue...we have hardwood floors throughout and we got that blue padding for a play area and put some area rugs down. She is also trying to walk and I guess she is feeling "top heavy" but I've had to watch her like a hawk because as soon as she looses her balance it's like "timber!" She falls straight back-- poor girl has hit her head pretty good a couple of times): I dont think she's caught on to the fact that she can catch herself by bending at the waist yet? Don't what you mean about the shoulder straps having anything to do with this though...... .Dianna (mommy to Marcela, 13 months)>> Hi,> Emma is getting her cast cut off on Friday and we are getting out firs out of cast x ray. Guest guest
Im freaked out about falling in the cast. My son gets his in September and i am so worried because we have stained concrete floors in our home. ( its a texas thing im told) i too have bought some of those mats that they use in daycares and covered the living room with then but what am i suppossed to do cover the whole house with them? Believe me i have thought about it! Im so worried he will really hurt himself and this will be after his chiari brain surgery as well. Any advice? Keep him in his playpen most of the time? > > > > Hi, > > Emma is getting her cast cut off on Friday and we are getting out firs out of cast x ray. We are soo excited yet nervous. Guest guest
Oh, Aimee, I'm sorry about the sleeping thing! That is really rough. I don't think getting the shoulder straps cut off is wise, I've read and heard the casts without over the shoulder are not as effective. Do NOT feel guilty, it's not your fault at ALL Be kind to yourself, take care of the caretaker. The falling is an issue because the cast adds weight, we've had some hard spills, but we just stay very close on stairs and hills, etc...you can do it, you are doing a wonderful job.Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 2nd cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 29) Subject: emma's 3 castTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Wednesday, July 15, 2009, 1:24 PM Hi,Emma is getting her cast cut off on Friday and we are getting out firs out of cast x ray. Guest guest
, You just do the very best you can. We made Jack a "play yard" an enclosed it with the gray gate like stuff (babies R US) and put down the blue mat...it helped us...by you do what you think is best!~KristaJack's Mom, Jack is 23 months old, in his 1st brace from Shriners Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah Subject: Re: emma's 3 castTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Thursday, July 16, 2009, 2:36 AM Im freaked out about falling in the cast. Guest guest
***disclaimer*** I feel that I need to through this in with the post since there are so many new parents that I think that I need to state this: Jack always had issues with sleeping after each cast and this lasted for about 3 weeks. His last cast (number 3) was when the... "I don't want to go to bed/fingers in the mouth puking" stated...that is when I did the "cry it out" and the crying only lasted about 15 min. if it went on longer than that I would have to come up with a different plan...but fortunately for us that is all that he cried for. I really feel that Jack's 1st two casts and sleeping issues had to do with fear/anxiety about not being able to move. I know that many parents say that their kids were up and running after the cast, but not Jack. He was literally "frozen" for the first 3 weeks after cast number 1. I think that sleeping issues for some parents/kids just go with the casting process. But hang in. Hope this clears things up.~KristaJack's Mom, Jack is 23 months old, in his 1st brace from Shriners Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah From: aimeeschwartz68 <aimeeschwartz68@ yahoo.com>Subject: [infantile_scoliosi s] emma's 3 castTo: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. comDate: Wednesday, July 15, 2009, 8:24 PM Hi,Emma is getting her cast cut off on Friday and we are getting out firs out of cast x ray. Guest guest
Aimee,Do whatever you feel is necessary for Emma.  There's nothing wrong with her sleeping with  you if it helps her to get some rest.  Isabella was my best sleeper out of my kids and since her 1st casting 2 weeks ago, she screams when I put her in the crib.  I gave up (not wanting to deal with puking on her cast) and now she is with  me.  She gets up still but will go right back to sleep as soon as she sees I'm with her.  Good luck... Guest guest
I also have a child who has never been a great sleeper. He has never puked but if he got too worked up in his crib it would take hours (yes hours) to get him to stop shaking and screaming. It was horrible. He was 1 and still not sleeping through the night. We ended up modifying the whole cry it out thing so it worked really well for us. We let him cry it out and going in every 5 minuets. We would then rock him until he had completely calmed down before putting him back in his crib. it took like an hour and a half the first night but within about a week he was going down really well. We are now working on it for nap. We just never leave him alone so long that he can get too worked up. We gradually were able to lengthen the time we let him cry it out. Also my son does not have shoulder straps on his cast. I don't alot about the difference but our dr. said that in cases like our son's they have not seen any difference.
