Guest guest
I'm not sure what medication he would recommend for a child, but I've been on several different medications myself for the last 10 years. The most recent ones have been Celexa for depression and social anxiety, Paxil for the same thing, Lexapro for the same, and Atavan for anxiety. Not all at the same time. :-) I was on Paxil for about 3 years and it worked great. My depression leveled off and I had no more anxiety attacks. Then developed nasty side effects. It turned out I wasn't just depressed, but I was manic-depressive and Paxil sent me into a hyper manic state. I laughed for 3 hours straight, literally. It was not fun. Then I went on a mood stabalizer for a while. I hated that. It was Depakote and I had to have blood draws every other month to check the levels and liver function, I gained a lot of weight on it, I had no energy for the first 6 months I was on it, and just felt crappy. I went off of that when the blood tests started showing problems with my liver. I went on Celexa after my second daughter was born when PPD hit me really hard. I did great on that with anxiety and the depression. Then in January my insurance changed what drugs they cover and they stopped covering Celexa. It was either change meds or come up with almost $300 a month out of pocket, so I changed to Lexapro. It's supposed to be the same med with less side effects, and I like how it handles my depression cycles and levels those out. But it doesn't do as well with the anxiety. So I'm on atavan for that. That works great. The down sides of that are that it does make me a little sleepy if I have to double up a dose (my doc prescribes a very lose dose 2.5 mg so I can double it if it's a really bad anxiety situation), and the other down side is it can be addicting. So I watch how much I take and when as much as I can. My doc keeps an eye on it as well, and he only writes me a script for it and 1 refill. Then he watches to see when I say I need more or if I call since I only get med checks every 3 or 4 months. So far he doesn't see a problem with it since he wrote my last script in March for 30 pills and 1 refill, and I'm still on the first 30 pills. I know my nephew has been on Paxil for about a year now, and he's 11. It does pretty well for him for his anxiety. Toni Wells http://designs.merlins-avalon.com Thanks for replies and medication question I do have a serious question regarding medication. We went to a new dr. last month who is going to see us again next week to prescribe medication for the first time. Has anyone had any experience w/medication to treat anxiety and extreme melt-downs. I don't know what he's going to recommend, but she doesn't have ADHD,ADD or unmanageable OCD (unless you count the reading). It's mostly just losing her grip (screaming, hitting, biting) and really getting anxious about things. I am just curious about other people's experiences with medication. Does it really help? What side effects are there? I do realize every person is different and won't react exactly like another, but I am interested in your opinions. Thanks in advance. Have a peaceful evening (if possible) Traci

Guest guest
My daughter, Ashton (13), has been taking Celexa for the last couple of years to deal with her high anxiety. She hasn't had any side effects from it and it seems to lessen her anxiety enough that we can deal with things much better. It does seem to make her tired so she takes it at night.
