Guest guest
Well, our doc said they used to have them ride up to the kid's ears sometimes, when they first started doing casting, so they modified their technique to avoid that.Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 4th cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 21) From: Borlik <christina_borlik@ hotmail.com>Subject: RE: [infantile_scoliosi s] "After Cast" LifeTo: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. comDate: Monday, October 5, 2009, 9:24 AM Hi ,Congrats on the correction! He went from 50 degrees out of cast to 21 degrees in cast. WOO HOO!! Anyway, im sure im speaking too soon here but this is easier than i thought it would be. True, he cant roll over, sit up or stand but surely he will soon, right?? And he is SO heavy!! Its very hard and akward to carry him. He does still fit into his jumper and exersaucer so he is at least able to be upright so maybe that is why this isnt as hard as i expected. The cast does not come down low on the hips so diapering has not been a problem. He does get frustrated at times bacause he cannot move or even turn his head due to the sholder straps but otherwise is his usual happy laid back self. The only problem we have had is even though he does not pull on the cast like he wants to take it off when i tried a shirt on him last night he FREAKED!! He cried and tried to rip it off! I dont have any idea why this is! I was just trying to get an idea of size and WOW what a jump in size it is! He went from wearing 9-12 months to 18 months being tight and 24 months fitting better. Did everyone experience this big of a size difference? Also, is everyones cast made of plaster and then covered in fiberglass or is this just a ish Rite thing? Guest guest
I think thats the deal with our sholder straps. Our docs havent been doing this as long as some of the docs, like SLC so it looks a little more rudimentary than some others do. Guest guest
Seriously, it's saving his spine, that's what really matters! As long as he's not uncomfortable. It should never be painful, other than maybe some slight rubbing at the edges. We had to have our tailbone area pulled out with the French pliers again, it was too tight at the back, like our first one. It took less than a minute for our PA, Mike, to do.Heidi, Bexon's Mama, (2 years old, in 4th cast from Salt Lake City Shriners, currently down from 61 degrees to 21) From: Borlik <christina_borlik@ hotmail.com>Subject: RE: [infantile_scoliosi s] "After Cast" LifeTo: infantile_scoliosis @yahoogroups. comDate: Monday, October 5, 2009, 9:24 AM Hi ,Congrats on the correction! Guest guest
,I know everyone talks about flossing but it will be ok if you do not do that. The way they do the shirt under the casts in Rochester, it's impossible to floss and Isabella's skin was pretty good. As time goes on, you'll get more comfortable and do what you think is necessary but just wanted to let you know that either way is ok. Guest guest
I really cant reach his shirt under his neck to be able to floss him so its a good thing its not required! Isaiah's PT came out today and worked with him and within the hour he was sitting up and almost crawling on his own and trying to pull to stand!!! YAY!! he just cant get from a laying down position to a sitting position yet. Once hes flat on his back he cant really move but if you put him in a sitting position he can balance himself so hes making improvements every day!!! She thinks he will be just fine but doesnt think PT is possible for the torticollis with the sholder straps so that will have to wait but thats ok. So im happy!! Tucker has gotten so use to it now that he lifts his head up so he can move his head a little bit. My son is in 24 months also b\c its the only size that fits around the cast. I'm so happy to hear that its going well for all of you! Maybe that is why he is so heavy??Anyway, sorry for rambling i just wanted to share my experience so far. Thanks for listening!!

Guest guest
GREAT NEWS!!!!!! I knew he would start moving. It takes time and every child is different.I know this makes you feel better too TashaMommy of 4 year old twin boys- and Fort Worth, TexasSeries of 6 casts for 14 months and now in a night brace. is treated at Texas ish Rite Hospital. You can read 's story at....http://www.infantilescoliosis.org/stories.htmlFrom: To: infantile_scoliosis Sent: Tuesday, October 6, 2009 10:17:00 AMSubject: Re: "After Cast" Life I really cant reach his shirt under his neck to be able to floss him so its a good thing its not required! Guest guest
when Nora had her first cast put on the straps got in her way too. since it was at halloween she dressed as a football player, she was so cute! after that, the doctor let us remove the straps while we're in the cast room befor they put the moleskin on, befor we leave the hospital. usually the same nurse trims her cast up so she knows Nora always goes " strapless " and we no longer have a problem with her cheeks being rubbed!
