Guest guest
it sounds like his cast is identical to my sons so that is actually a relief for me!! He went from 50 degrees out of cast to 21 degrees in cast. WOO HOO!! Anyway, im sure im speaking too soon here but this is easier than i thought it would be. True, he cant roll over, sit up or stand but surely he will soon, right?? And he is SO heavy!! Its very hard and akward to carry him. He does still fit into his jumper and exersaucer so he is at least able to be upright so maybe that is why this isnt as hard as i expected. The cast does not come down low on the hips so diapering has not been a problem. He does get frustrated at times bacause he cannot move or even turn his head due to the sholder straps but otherwise is his usual happy laid back self. The only problem we have had is even though he does not pull on the cast like he wants to take it off when i tried a shirt on him last night he FREAKED!! He cried and tried to rip it off! I dont have any idea why this is! I was just trying to get an idea of size and WOW what a jump in size it is! He went from wearing 9-12 months to 18 months being tight and 24 months fitting better. Did everyone experience this big of a size difference? Also, is everyones cast made of plaster and then covered in fiberglass or is this just a ish Rite thing? Maybe that is why he is so heavy?? Anyway, sorry for rambling i just wanted to share my experience so far. Thanks for listening!!
Guest guest
Hayden hated wearing a shirt over the cast too, but just in the past two or three days, he is wearing a shirt, b/c I told him if he doesn't wear one he can't go out to the store, or outside without it. I think they don't like to feel hot, and the cast is already so cumbersome, so the shirt over it makes it even worse. But keep trying, thats what we did, and he will eventually give in. Glad things are going so well. He is a sweet baby boy and always so happy. Guest guest
, Thanks for sending the moleskin. Im sure its much better than the felt they gave me at ish. Isnt it funny how they learn to do things differently to adapt? Im hopeful Isaiah will be at least sitting up soon! Joan, At least you can reason with Hayden about wearing a shirt. All i did was try it on him and you would have thought it was the end of the world. I think its bacause of the sholder straps on the cast and how close it is to his face that the shirt just was too much around the face. Besides, it looked REALLY funny on him. He looked like a monster or something...i dont know how to explain exactly. Im sure you all know what i mean! Guest guest
I know it's hard to reason with a one year old. I understand. Yes, I know what you mean, we call Hayden the football player, b/c that is exactly what he looks like with a shirt on over his cast. It does look silly, but we have gotten used to it more every day. I would just keep trying a shirt once or twice a day and maybe eventually he will take to it. Good luck... Guest guest
Dr Rathjen told us to do it. And you just grab one end like at the bottom and then another end near his neck (make sure he is laying on his back) and then just pull up and down so it "scratches" the skin and any itch he may have. They said once a day but I do it whenever he is itchy... try it, he may like how it feels... it just rubs his skin gently Joanmom to Hayden 2 1/233 degrees1st cast down from 62 degrees Treated at ish Rite Hospital Dallas, TX To: infantile_scoliosis Sent: Friday, October 2, 2009 7:39:35 PMSubject: Re: "After Cast" Life See, they never said a word to me about flossing and it wasnt in the cast care booklet either! Guest guest
Hi ,The reason for flossing is to exfoliate the skin, and keep it healthy. It can't really hurt and it sorta helps to scratch 'the itch'. In our 1st cast we had a new aide and she cut and taped the shirt to the cast, so we couldn't floss. Not only was she very dirty underneath when we took off the cast, she also had a seed that had germinated and was growing into her skin!! We flossed with all the other casts and it was much cleaner. Guest guest
Melinda, He is in not in any pain maybe a little discomfort from the adjustment from the cast, but definatley not in pain. Did your daughter have reflux before bracing or is this a new symptom?? I can say it sounds like casting is much easier from the brace asfar as you are describing. We did not brace prior to casting. we had to have brain surgery done before cast could be applied. otherwise he would have been casted at 9 to 10 mos of age. If you feel it is too tight call her doc asap and see what they say. it may be uncomfortable but should not be painful. Maybe she is just crying because she is not used to it yet. Give it time. Best of luck! Subject: Re: "After Cast" LifeTo: infantile_scoliosis Date: Friday, October 2, 2009, 7:47 PM Hi , Good to hear you and Isaiah are doing well so far. Guest guest
Ian's first cast was strictly plaster, but as we got further into the process they used fiberglass. Guest guest
Melinda, Dont worry im good at overreacting too! Sounds like shes not in pain if shes sleeping thru the night, she may just be very uncomfortable or mad because her movement is restricted. Isaiah is pretty frustrated right now because he cant move but hes not in any pain so its hopefully the same thing for your daughter. Funny you posted now...i was just thinking of you Isaiah had brain surgery because he has something called a chiari I malformation. This was found on his MRI of the brain and spine and it is where the brain sits too low in the back of the head into the spinal colomn area. It was putting alot of pressure on his spine and restricting CSF flow so they had to do a decompression surgery, or craniotomyand a laminectomy ( removal of C1 vertebrae) to relieve the pressure. He had it done 8-19-09 and hes doing great!! Thanks for asking!! I hope she adjusts to her brace soon...i would definately ask about the reflux thing. Keep us posted! He hasnt cried much from discomfort or any pain? My daughter got her 1st brace today and she has been crying all day, she has terribe reflux too. Everything is coming back up. Was Isaiah in a brace before his cast? Just wondering if the cast is worse than the brace (as far as the baby getting used to). Well, good luck and very happy to hear your doing great!! Melinda Mommy of Marlycia 8 mnths, Natalya 22 mnths Scranton, PA [infantile_scoliosi s] "After Cast" Life Hi everyone,We have been home since yesterday from Isaiah's 1st cast that was applied Tuesday. Maybe that is why he is so heavy??Anyway, sorry for rambling i just wanted to share my experience so far. Thanks for listening!!
Guest guest
I'm sure shes not in pain, like everyone else said, shes just a baby, constantly on the go, wanting to move. So shes probably just uncomfortable. The reflux he said is normal but I dont know about this much and the runny nose, not sure. So, back to Isaiah, wow, did they suspect it before the MRI, or thats the only reason they found out? I wonder, should I request they do an MRI on Marly? If I remember correctly, some others said their children had MRI's before they were casted. You and Isaiah are very brave, I'm crying about a brace and that poor kid had brain surgery. My heart goes out to him and you Melinda [infantile_scoliosi s] "After Cast" Life Hi everyone,We have been home since yesterday from Isaiah's 1st cast that was applied Tuesday.
