Guest guest
Hi all, Thanks again for your thoughts and suggestions. They have helped tremendously during this time. I wanted to update you all on DD. She has had a pretty good weekend. I would say that she is returning to her normal self. There are ups and downs (somewhat like a roller coaster ride!!) - but I have seen more and more positive this weekend. Of course, she hasn't had to go to school - so, the real test is tomorrow. But the crying and obsessing over school at home has diminished - so, hopefully, it will diminish at school as well. One of you suggested to keep her mind busy this weekend - so, we have tried to do that. My husband even took her by the school yesterday. Luckily, it was open and they were able to go to her classroom. This helped her face her fears. I also had her go to this site: http://www.jjsplace.org/sitemap.html. It's a site for childhood OCD and she played " Whack the OCD Monster " and also made her own OCD monster. We have been showing her that this is just a small part of her brain and how she needs to use the rest of her brain to fight that OCD monster and overcome it. We also started a worry journal that we are encouraging her to write in about her worries. We are also trying to get her to write about things she likes to do and things that she is talented at - as we think it's important for her to focus on the positive aspects during this rough time too. She will take the worry journal to school to write in if she feels the need to cry. At home, this has helped to stop her tears. We have heard DD walking around the house singing today, arguing w/her sister (I never thought that would be a welcome sound!!) and laughing. I see her coming back. I'm very worried about tomorrow - but I'm trying to be super positive for her. I will continue to keep you all posted. Thanks again for all the help and support! Guest guest
Anne, so glad she is doing a bit better this weekend. Distractions always helped our son too. Hope it goes well tomorrow. Guest guest
Hi Anne, So good to read your post and hear all the positive things you did this weekend. You had some really great ideas, the journal, visiting the classroom, and that website sounds very cool I have not heard of it I hope others check it out. It sounds like you really helped turn things around for your daughter, it's such a relief when they are more themselves. Mondays and the transition back to school is just hard for many (even without OCD). I'm betting it will get a bit easier each week. Sometimes it's just time and getting used to things. Transitions can be so hard for these kids, I find. I always put off talking about whatever transition was coming up until the last moment possible, so less time to worry and anticipate, but did leave some time to make the shift. Ideally no time for thinking, just doing and staying focussed on the task at hand, just keep moving. Mine literally gets up puts on clothes and goes out the door, his choice, and will get agitated if I'm not ready when he is. Hope your morning goes relatively smoothly! Hugs!
