Guest guest
No I to mean society as a whole how do they create a gesture that is understood by them all to mean a thing and how do they come to knowing a middle finger to mean sex things in bad way. what is the connection to this gesture and the act of sex things. That to me is to say if I to hold up my last 3 fingers straight up and say this means I bite, would society to make the connection and understand that gesture as a whole? maybe no, But the finger things seems to be a bad gesture in most world places too not just USA/so how did their gesture get understood by society as a bad word things. Confused that maybe NT have some special language basis that we with ASD lack. Sondra
Guest guest
Donelle thanks for this informative ways gestures get used and learned, it was much helpful to me. So some gestures can be used that have no real connection to the actual act of it meaning. Like middle finger and sex dont see how they connect and same as my 3 fingers and bite are not connected . Guest guest
Sondra, very interesting question. I think that there are people who study where gestures and expressions come from, and how they get started. Interestingly, these gestures are not universal. There are many countries where a raised middle finger means nothing. The Soviet Union was one of these -- a friend of ours was telling us a long time ago that shortly after she came to the U.S., she was driving and someone flipped her off (this is a term for raising the middle finger). She had no idea what this meant, but for some reason assumed it meant " Hi " . So, for a while, whenever she was in traffic she would occasionally do this, thinking she was being friendly, LOL. Anyway, this is a long time ago, so perhaps by now American culture has invaded Russia enough so that they know what this is. Also, interestingly, although this gesture is not universal, nearly every culture has *some* sort of a rude gesture for this sort of thing (the rude term). Inna. Guest guest
This is fascinating because I read that in England our sign for " Victory " (the " V " with the pointer and middle finger) is considered a rude gesture. Way back when the french and the English were at war, the English used to stick up thier pointer finger and thier middle finger and wave it at the French, say ha ha F*uck you, because the English would cut off the French prisoners middle finger, so they could not shoot the bow and arrow anymore and therefore could not fight. Guest guest
True, and I always thought is was fascinating that Winston Churchill so readily used the " V for Victory " during World War II! Must have caused a bit of a stir in Britain. > This is fascinating because I read that in England our sign for > " Victory " (the " V " with the pointer and middle finger) is considered a > rude gesture. > > Date: Fri, 09 Jan 2004 02:08:22 +0000 > > Subject: Re: re: how does a child learn the meaning of giving the > finger > > How the middle finger became a F*uck you gesture.
