I had to translate a ISO-9001 (Quality Manual) update for a Japanese

medical instrument company a few days ago.

The previous version had the following translation:

Active embedded medical instruments ǽưËä¹þ¤ß°åÎŵ¡´ï

Embedded medical instruments Ëä¹þ¤ß°åÎŵ¡´ï

In other parts of the document the update had no English counterpart

(that was my job to write one).

After some googling I found that " embedded " is sometimes a synonym of

" implanted " and sometimes not.

My understanding was that an embedded " medical instrument " was set to

be a medical tool with a specific function (not necessarily a bodily

function replacement) and that an " implanted " medical instrument was

rather a constructed replacement for a lost or impaired bodily

function.

Since I only have a little experience in this field (although I do more

ISO generic stuff) I wondered if you could give me a few insights, even

though the job has already been delivered.
