Re: The Medicine Game

Risperdal made a huge and nearly immediate difference for my daughter.

She became less tense, less angry and her OCD finally became manageable. SSRIs

alone didn't work for her. She took only .25 mg for two years, and has recently

increased it because she has some pretty bad tics, but we've never had any

side effects at all from it (yet!). I have never liked giving it to her because

it is such a powerful medicine, but it works wonders. She has not gained any

weight from it as many, many kids do, perhaps because she takes a stimulant for

her ADHD which kind of balances it out.

Good luck with this - I hope it helps your son too.

Hi , my daughter took Risperdal for about 2 1/2 years. It was

prescribed for her to reduce ticcing and judging from that it worked in 2-3

days, though the effect continued to build over the next few weeks. She

started at .25mg/day and that was the dose she most often took though we

could increase it up to 1mg/day if her tics were waxing.

We also noticed lessened impulsivity and irritability which was a nice

effect, it seemed to balance the activation and " urge " stuff she had as a

side effect from Zoloft. She was just calmer overall and had a second or

two in between thought and action.

It did make her sleepy--a side effect that for her never diminished--so we

gave it at bedtime. When we tried to give it in the day she was low-energy

and yawning, not good for school obviously. She did not gain weight taking

this med (did have a temporary increase in appetite for a couple of weeks

when first starting it), though this is a common side effect of Risperdal.

I have been wondering how you and your son were doing. I'm sorry things are

still rough and hope Risperdal turns things around quickly. The medicine

game is I think one of the most difficult parts of treating our young kids

with disorders. Fortunately Risperdal (unlike SSRIs) rather quickly lets

you know whether it will help or not :-)

Take care,

Hi, . I am very familiar with Risperdal--and Zyprexa. has

taken both and is currently taking Risperdal. You should notice a change

soon--it

didn't take us very long to see results. When I didn't pick up her refill on

time the other day, we explained to that it's the " pill that keeps you

from screaming. " She was insulted and told us " I don't scream! " and my older

daughter laughed and said, " No kidding! That's because you take the pill! "

It has helped to keep calm and more evenly tempered. I understand that

it can cause weight gain but we haven't seen that in , who is pushing

eleven. My older daughter, who does have weight issues, takes Abilify instead

because of the weight gain possiblity. Good luck--it will more than likely make

a nice difference for you and your son. Kelley in NV

mydaughter had bad side effects with risperdal-weight gain, lactation, and

meltdowns...then on to geodon,which helped a little,and now on to abilify,which

so far,is working...although she still cannot seem to lose her added pounds.
