Moving to Houston -- and some notes for GSaunders

Abijann, you asked how my job is going.

On October 31 I received a 60-day letter. It gave me until 12-29 to find a

job within my company. I applied for a couple jobs but there were not many

that appealed to me, and I finally decided I'd retire on 12-29. I would like

to have completed my 30 years (I have 27.5 years) but I resigned myself to

retiring and starting a new phase of my life.

Then last Tuesday (12-19) I got a job offer and I have accepted it. I will

be running a factory for my company. SO and I will be moving to

Houston sometime around February or March! I really hate to move (well, does

anyone like it??) but this is the best thing for us, especially financially.

When I originally interviewed for this job, it wasn't what I was looking

for. I would have had all the responsibility but no real authority since all

my people would have reported to a manager in California. I shared my

concerns with the hiring manager. I have run large operations autonomously

both in my present job and in my previous one. Apparently my reputation and

my Vice President's recommendation did the trick. They are creating a new

job title for me (hence the delay for a couple months). So I'll have the

authority and if there are problems, they will be my own responsibility!!

When I first joined this list the prospect of moving from the Los Angeles

area half-way across the country would have been impossible. was so

very ill. Reading GSaunders' posts brings back so many difficult memories.

(GSaunders, do give us your name!) Today still doesn't have the

strength and stamina we'd like to see in a man of 43, but he's well enough

to do most of the household chores and repairs, and is excited about the

move.

Some of you may recall that we own property in South Carolina. 's

family is there and we hope to live there when I retire. Now it looks like

I'll be retiring in 2009 or 2010. Once we sell the house here and get

settled in Houston, will start working on the house in So. Carolina.

So, I hope GSaunders is reading this. In March, 2005 had ascites and

was virtually bedridden. He could barely walk. For over a year he never ate

solid food. He went from the overweight caused by the ascites down to 135

lbs on his 6'3 " frame. Every day he re-gains strength. SO don't give up hope

for your husband. was angry that I took him to the hospital on

Valentines Day in 2005, but he now acknowledges that I saved his life. His

liver tests are now in the normal range.

Merry Christmas to all!

Dorothy
