Guest guest
Thanks to all of you who answered. Flow, I don't know how you gauge your Achalasia life span, but I had my first symptoms a year ago. It started with the severe chest pains and at my age, first thoughts were heart. My doctor did immediately order a barium swallow and it showed the motility problem, but we went through the entire heart examine, including Catheterization to rule out the heart problem. My next problem was the choking and it came on really fast, then the night coughing. The regurgitation started late December and again very fast. Every time I ate or swallowed anything it came back. I was not diagnosed until the later part of June. Foods have gotten somewhat better. Maybe the Botox shot did help more than I thought, but I was expecting much better results. Maybe I am now learning to eat better, slower, etc., which has aided in that respect. The regurgitation is still there each time I eat or drink but I don't lose all the food anymore. I have learned so much more from you folks than I have from the doctors. Gee, our disease is really gross isn't it? I don't remember jokes very well but on a lighter note, let me tell you what I had for dinner tonight. LOL I baked chicken covered with Vidalia Onion salad dressing with a little lime juice added. After it was done, I chopped it in a food chopper and added some of the dressing to make it very moist. It was really good and went down very easily. See I am finally learning how to eat. LOL. Guest guest
Flora- When I first started having symptoms of achalasia,I noticed I could eat mashed potatoes, but not ice cream. The Dr. that diagnosed me told me that " cold " actually aggravates achalasia. Abby
Guest guest
Thank you so much for taking the time to pass along your suggestions. I sure do appreciate it! Unfortunately, I do not have any type of dietician....amazing how busy the Dr. office seems to be...I am waiting for a call from the nurse today to discuss it all. Thanks again and I will keep you posted:) Liquids Judy and , 1) Judy ,as soembody else has suggested you need to know which liquids you are allowed before surgery. In many cases prior to surgery it is only clear fluids and in all honesty professionals should have told you exactly what you are allowed, so I would agree ...... ask! 2) , if you are only able to tolerate fluids you should really seek the guidance of your dietician as there is a real danger of becoming malnourished if you just have normal soups , shakes etc. You need a plan for you as an individual ......... it is easy to become deficient in some of the rarer trace elements and so ask for help soon esp. if this liquid diet is going to continue for very long. Sorry to hear the Bot Tox hasn't worked. I am shocked by the numbersof people who seem to be left to struggle without help and woithout nutritional supplimentation ebing worked out for them by heaalth care porfessionals . Do you not have dieticians to help you ? If you can tolerate protein ( you should know if you have any other conditions which mean you cannot) add 1 dessertspoon of milk powder to a cup of milk when making milk shakes, Add the same to a tin or packet of soup. Try and make your own soups if you can and add the same milk powder to it. Use things like Marmite, bovril or tomato puree to add flavour to it all. If you like sweet drinks then use plain chocolate melted into milk ( add the 1 dessert spoon milk powder as well!!) for hot chocolate. Add ice cream or yogurt to milk shakes Check out your pharmacy stores and see what they have for sale, drinks here are things like build up, complan and nutriplus and Build up Nutrition boost powder which is a neutral powder that can be added to any food or drink .. then on prescription there are drinks such as Enlive, Fortijuice, Fortifresh, Fortisip etc. One soup that I can alwasy eat that never causes me any pain ( most odd as to why this should be !!) is Spinach and Nutmeg or Watercress and Nutmeg ........... Use fresh spinach if you can ...... add a little potato and onion and a pinch of nutmeg , cook and blend until totally smooth .. then hopefully enjoy !!! In addition to all of this you might need a tablet suppliment as well .. again on prescription as the over the counter ones probably won't be enough . I live on liquids all the time .............. I know its very very hard and takes thought and imagination ... the foods I liquidise might suit me fine one day and not the next ....... you need to experiment All the best , let me know how you get on

Guest guest
, I used to feel tired all the time until I started doing water aerobics. That seems to have really helped me with gaining some energy. I do take all the vits and supplements with the exception of the bran and I rarely take time for the protein shakes. If I am out in the heat or exherting my self, like doing yard work, etc I can get dehydrated pretty quick. I just increase my gatorade and salt intake. I eat ALOT of watermelon with salt on it. My one year blood work all came back normal. > , > > how are you feeling? do you ever feel dehydrated or washed out? > > Thanks for replying. Guest guest
My hat is off to you for going this long and not eating. As long as you're drinking lots of protein drinks to protect your hair and energy. I know the manual says the longer we stay on liquids the more we'll lose. I feel that this is not suppose to make us miserable... Unless you're fine with not eating. I did that one time when I lost a large amount of weight and remembering it not being much fun for 6 weeks. After having the MGB I added soft foods very, very slowly after 2 weeks. I have lost 152 in 9 months. I started out heavier than you and I know that makes a difference, but it doesn't seem that eating sooner has slowed my loss. I eat very healthy, but basically what I want. Just a thought.... My friend that went with me at the same time to have the MGB has also lost > than 109 pounds as of a couple of weeks ago too. I have actually seen Dana respond to some that adding a little fat is a good thing if their loss has slowed down. You may want to talk to her a little on this subject. Good luck and I am glad you're doing great. Kim
Guest guest
Dear Kim, Thanks so much for the information. I'm doing pretty well on liquids. I cannot take the whey protein but tolerate Dr. Adkins shakes that are low carb., have a little fat, and are high protein. If I can tolerate 2 shakes/day + 2 cups of yogurt/day + V8, Broths, and Gatorade, I'm doing pretty well on protein and think I can go longer. Again, thanks for the information. Guest guest
Hi Sara- I believe that in the beginning Dr.R required that patients stay on liquids 2 months. Then he changed the program as he went along. If you are making sure that you are consuming something frequently and getting in good protein (like yogurt) and your vitamins it is fine. Dr R says we come to him well nourished so a few weeks is not going to be a problem. I have read posts from others over the last 2 years that have stayed on liquids for 2 months and they seem to be very successful. Guest guest
Yes, that's fine. The weight loss is supposed to be better the longer you stay on liquids, too. in OK In a message dated 11/16/2002 6:33:53 AM Central Standard Time, ssdsgo@... writes: << How long is it safe to stay on liquids? Guest guest
i had my surgery in Aug. 2006. My last fill was in Dec. 10th. I'm eating protein everyday, but my hair is starting to fall out in strands, when I brush my hair. > > > > > > Hi, > > Most of the time when I drink liquids I have the same feeling as > if > > I have something stuck (PBing). Guest guest
Your hair WILL grow back. The general opinion on temporary hair loss is that it is a delayed effect of general anesthesia. Sometimes it is weeks later, sometimes months. Don't waste your money on fancy or expensive " hair junk " . Just continue to eat right. Happened to me too, at about 8 months, but it is back. Really. dan " Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there. Guest guest
Hi, I've been taking sublingual Biotin since my surgery almost 2 years ago. I did have some hair loss the first few months out. I think it seems more noticable that you are losing it if you have long hair. Mine is long. I think its actually a little thicker now then before my surgery. Your overall health will affect your hair and once you begin to get healthier with a good slow weight loss, good exercise and take a good B-complex(I use chewable) and an added Bioton supplement, you will be happy with the results. > > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > Most of the time when I drink liquids I have the same feeling > as > > if > > > I have something stuck (PBing).
