OCD & Paranoia

Continuing to get worse and unable to even attempt therapy,

relaxation, bossing or any of it, DS seems to be drifting into

paranoia, i.e. won't sit near a window, wants all the blinds

closed...he's absolutely convinced that a mysterious " someone " is

either going to break into our house and murder him or shoot him

through one of the windows. We do NOT live in a violent area.

Is this the OCD or is he drifting into real paranoia and something

else?

Side note: We're beginning to lose faith in his current therapist.

Its been 3 months and all we've done is lose ground. His fears and

anxiety are greater now than ever. DW spent 10-15 min. yesterday

explaining how and why it was impossible for a shark to be in the

bath water he drew for himself and was sitting in. We live in SW

PA...hardly shark encounter territory.

Current daily meds:

40mg Lexapro (started @ 10mg back in Nov., been on 40 for a week)

75mg Seroquel (just started this two days ago to help get him to

sleep)

Yesterday he had a crisis feeling like he needed to rip his skin off,

repeated saying he was going crazy and he didn't know if he was doing

all this on purpose, twisting his head from side to side...horrible

scary stuff.

Called the therapist that we just saw yesterday morning and she

seemed annoyed that I was calling. She commented yesterday about how

busy she is and made a sort of off-hand remark about how much I call

which is usually when he's in that sate of mind and we don't know

what to do with him or how to help him.

I HATE THIS!!!

Hi, sounds like you're right about the therapist, I'd begin looking!

Do you think the meds might need changed? Or perhaps just one of

them. They affect each person so differently. Like Seroquel might

be a lifesaver for one but drive another up the wall (making that up,

just an example). If there was a " point " in the dosages where he was

doing better and you've just increased, perhaps an adjustment down

might be needed. Just some thoughts as we're on our first medication

also but luckily things are going well.

What you describe does sound like paranoia but doesn't mean it " is. "

Also another thought that it could be a reaction to medication. The

bit about feeling he needed to rip his skin off just sounds familiar

to me for some reason and makes me think " medication. "

Sorry, no help here, just some thoughts. I know Melinda H. in this

group recently had a time with her son on medication and he did

better as they backed off, I believe. You might look back at her

posts and see if anything seems similar.

Keep us updated, I know this is sooooo tough to deal with 24/7 and

then with new behaviors too!!

We went through several months of " bad guys are going to break in and kill

me...you...etc " before our daughter was fully treated wth therapy and meds.

If your child is getting worse and the therapist acts like you are an

inconveience it might be worth looking for a new one.

HI:

Hugs to you!!

Ds' worry about violence sounds like an all-too-typical OCD obsession

to me. OUr son would worry that he would kill us or other people and

the fear of harm is a very common variety of OCD torture.

From what you have written it sounds like it is high time for you to

hit the trail to find a new therapist. Someone who makes you feel at

fault for being upset about a waxing of symptoms in your son sounds

like they just don't understand how OCD works. And if you have been

seeing them for months without improvement, you can follow Dr. Fred

Penzel's advice to seek a new therapist if you have had five sessions

without improvement. I wish I had gotten that advice from him much

earlier in our struggles with OCD but he did save us a lot of money

after we learned this valuable lesson.

GOod luck, it will improve, take care, aloha, kathy (h)
