I have showed, milked and exported dairy goats since 1986. A member of American Dairy Goat Association since 1990, a current committee member on several committee's. I also belong to South Central Goat Assoc., where we are currently talking about TX laws concerning the on farm sales of raw goat milk. We obviously would like to see our laws mirror more closely those of Arkansas and OK, in that 100 gallons may be sold monthly, without grade A liscensing. The real battle of raw milk sales to stores seems to be way out of reach as of now. I currently and for the last several years, sell my milk with animal consumption labels, this is really just and end run around unexisisting laws. I have sold milk legally to a candy maker in Houston, she was the one who started our thinking of selling our milk frozen. She would pick all I had up weekly, frozen, she made cajeta and Mexican pralines for the mexican food resturants in Houston. We are able to sell raw milk in Texas to someone else with a liscense to make it into something, candy and cheese. Currently the local cheese plant purchases milk from several folks this way, without being a grade A dairy. Alas his prices are way to low to be profitable. We currently get 5$ per gallon, the milk is sold in gallon zip lock baggies frozen flat, 1/2 gallon per bag. Prices closer to Houston are 8$, still closer are 13$. Being further out I am happy to get the 5$ and to sell all my milk every week. I also make cheese and sell soap and lotion. Texas also has brisk sales of milk to those who raise deer and of course dogs. Thanks for the opportunity to apply to this list. Guest guest
Welcome Vicki! I grew up north of Houston, Conroe actually. Glad to have you on the list. How fun. There are getting to be a lot of Texans on this list. It DOES figure doesn't it? Texas even has in their constitution the right to still secede from the union and become another country. If they did that I would move back there. HA! I love it. I live in Nashville, TN now and I really miss Texas. Anyway, welcome to the list. Guest guest
Thanks for the welcomes. I am north of Cleveland near Coldspring. I am also glad to add to the numbers of dairygoat gals! Also welcome Tammy! Speaking of keifer, was this an aquired taste for all of you? I can not stomach it, although several of my customers now have some of these grains I started with, and some purchase it weekly since they do not want to have to make it (like it's so difficult). I tell myself that it is good for me, get down about two drinks, ewwww sorry I can't do this. So without loading it with sugar any ideas? Or perhaps others who don't like this. Oddly I love yogurt and make it everyother day. Vicki Vicki McGaugh Lonesome Doe Nubians North of Houston Texas Goat Newbie? Guest guest
Hi Vicki! I hated the taste of Kefir when I first tried it, but it grew on me. I have to say I never did like the Goat's milk kefir though! I put it in smoothies for my kids - kefir and frozne berries in a blender and the drink it up - not full of sugar but really high on antioxidants! GL, > Thanks for the welcomes.
