Guest guest
Hi, again, All! Since I'm looking at a young Jersey heifer for the first time tonight, I want to know as much as I can about the eventual costs. I have looked around at sites that sell semen, but none of them I've seen list cost. Has anybody done this who can tell me a price range? I presume it will cost for the semen itself, possible shipping, and the AI tech, but have no idea if it will add up to $50 or $500. Thanks for your help, Amy M. Guest guest
Talk to a local cow dairy and see if they will do the Ai for you. Generally a somewhat larger dairy will have AI techs that do all their own. I used to do this when I worked at a large cow dairy. You would just have to know your cow was in heat and transport her to their facility. You could also have someone come to your place depending on where you lived. Semen doesn't cost that much but I don't know what the AI tech would charge. Vets sometimes will do this service also but you will pay alot more for their services. I use Select Sires, and the cost per straw ranges from $10.00 to whatever, the Guernsey bull semen I specially ordered was $18.00 per straw. My AI tech has to drive an hour each way to get here, and will come when I think the time is right, be it 5:00 AM or 11 PM. I always " tip " her at least $10.00, and when she comes really early, or really late, it's $20.00. My thoughts on this are that I wouldn't go for a two hour drive in the middle of the night for a measley $35.00--let alone do what she does when she gets here! This is in Western Washington. One thing I've learned on the internet is that we tend to have to pay more for most services than others in other parts of the country, but I can't imagine anyone doing it for less than the $35.00. Besides their mileage, these wonderful people have to pay for their schooling, maintaining their tanks, and usually have thousands of dollars tied up in inventory. Treat them right, and they will treat you right. Kathie
Guest guest
Straws of Bull semen range from $5 to $75 here. I have chosen to go with the Miniature Jersey to create a small, docile, 2-4 gal/day (that's low production) easy to manage Jersey. Typical Mini-Jersey semen straws are $50 each. Shipping 3 straws costs me about $75 and I pay the inseminator $25 for coming over & breeding my cow. SO THAT IS A HUNDRED BUCKS A POP!!! I HAVE ONE HEIFER I HAVE BRED EIGHT TIMES. But most take between 1-4 straws/heats to " settle " with a pregancy. -Sally --- In RawDairy , " mucklingmom " ....I want to know as much as I can about the eventual costs.
