I am so impressed with your energy and generosity. That is amazing. I would love to do something like that, but my husband would never go for it. That is a great idea. I'm so glad I asked. Thanks, Pat K

Hi Pat,making friends has been a struggle for my son. What I did to bridge the gap was invite homeless teens and teens with troubled home situations to stay with us. It started last school year. My son met a teen who had no place to stay, had been kicked out of his adopted parents home. My son asked if the teen could spend the night for 30 days, lol. I contacted the boys parents and they confirmed and were happy he had a place to stay. He stayed 1/2 a year. We live in a vacation/resort town so alot of kids come through here to camp, runaway ect. Well the boy enrolled in my sons school. Then my son had a friend at school! That kid knew or met another kid ect. Then I repeated the stay here finish school idea. I had 4 teens here through school and summer. This has been a good social experience for my son. His friends didnt know about autism. Usually I tell them a couple of things at a time as questions or situations arise. Sometimes I had them look on the internet and read a little and tell me 2 things about autism. It gave my son the much needed friends at school and home. It upset the neighborhood and there was complaining/cops because I had so many teens coming and going. The worst thing that happened was one of the boys had drug problems and graffitied the big bedroom{garage remodel}with spray paint and swear words the night before he had to leave{to juvinelle hall}. We put up bunk beds, thrift store beds ect. into one big room and rubber maid for clothes,a tv and video games. The boys that moved away got jobs and room mates/ apartments here in our small town and are still friends like brothers to my family. They had abusive homes before staying with us and were misfits of sorts but good kids. My son never really had friends at school or home before that except for one alcohol syndrome young adult boy who lived near us. I kept it real simple. Go to school,no name calling/fighting,clean room & laundry once a week and one big dinner together on the weekend. They all learned about living with autism first hand. 3 of my children are autistic. They big brother, befriend my son and all my children and they all found things to laugh together about. We live in Washington. Our community doesnt offer any autism related schooling except iep. I have thought about other places to live where the resources would be better. The good things about a small town are no traffic. Everything close to home on a small scale. One grocery store. My autistic teen and young adult learned to shop. My young adult got her drivers permit and drives to the store. One McDs. No stop lights, traffic. Dial a ride available and well used by my kids. Everyone knows everyone at stores ect. is good and bad. I think a big city would be to hard for them to navigate. I had to homeschool alot through the difficult years and mainstream the easier times. Hi Pat,making friends has been a struggle for my son. What I did to

camp, runaway ect. Well the boy enrolled in my sons school. Then my

son had a friend at school! That kid knew or met another kid ect.

Then I repeated the stay here finish school idea. I had 4 teens here

through school and summer. This has been a good social experience for

my son. His friends didnt know about autism. Usually I tell them a

couple of things at a time as questions or situations arise.

Sometimes I had them look on the internet and read a little and tell

me 2 things about autism. It gave my son the much needed friends at

school and home. It upset the neighborhood and there was complaining/

cops because I had so many teens coming and going. The worst thing

that happened was one of the boys had drug problems and graffitied

the big bedroom{garage remodel}with spray paint and swear words the

night before he had to leave{to juvinelle hall}. We put up bunk

beds, thrift store beds ect. into one big room and rubber maid for

clothes,a tv and video games. The boys that moved away got jobs and

room mates/ apartments here in our small town and are still friends

like brothers to my family. They had abusive homes before staying

with us and were misfits of sorts but good kids. My son never really

had friends at school or home before that except for one alcohol

syndrome young adult boy who lived near us. I kept it real simple. Go

and one big dinner together on the weekend. They all learned about

living with autism first hand. 3 of my children are autistic. They

good things about a small town are no traffic. Everything close to

home on a small scale. One grocery store. My autistic teen and young

adult learned to shop. My young adult got her drivers permit and

drives to the store. One McDs. No stop lights, traffic. Dial a ride

available and well used by my kids. Everyone knows everyone at stores

ect. is good and bad. I think a big city would be to hard for them to

navigate. I had to homeschool alot through the difficult years and

mainstream the easier times. Where would your family move to or from?

Best wishes,

Tishanne

Tishanne, thanks for telling me about the prom. That makes my day. You are a great creative, fun loving Mom; your kids are so blessed. You are such an encouragement. I'll try to live more courageously. LOL, Pat K

Hi Pat,my husband would have never gone for this while he had his work schedule. He might have thought I really was crazy, lol. He had a stroke last December. After that he became more willing to try my ideas. The best memory I have of the teen boys staying here and my son is that they went{solo} to the hs prom. They decided at the very last minute about going. I jumped on their enthusiam and ran to the thrift stores. I got 2 bags of suits and tux,$5.00 per bag. No one knew their size, lol. They were all trying things on and modeling. It was so darn funny and cute. They all found something to fit and dressed up to go. They wore suits with their tennis shoes, lol. I still get a{happy} tear in my eye, so do my older daughters. We got pictures at home of them modeling suits, lol and dressed up to go. I was so happy for them. My son would have never gone without the friendship of those teens or wore a tux.Tishanne>> I am so impressed with your energy and generosity. That is amazing. Hi Pat,my husband would have never gone for this while he had his

work schedule. He might have thought I really was crazy, lol. He had a

stroke last December. After that he became more willing to try my

ideas. The best memory I have of the teen boys staying here and my

son is that they went{solo} to the hs prom. They decided at the very

last minute about going. I jumped on their enthusiam and ran to the

thrift stores. I got 2 bags of suits and tux,$5.00 per bag. No one

knew their size, lol. They were all trying things on and modeling. It

was so darn funny and cute. They all found something to fit and

dressed up to go. They wore suits with their tennis shoes, lol. I

still get a{happy} tear in my eye, so do my older daughters. We got

pictures at home of them modeling suits, lol and dressed up to go. I

was so happy for them. My son would have never gone without the

friendship of those teens or wore a tux.
