Guest guest
Hi Heidi, welcome! Don't know about NH, but here in North Carolina the Medicaid is really great for mental health services (I work as an office asst at our mental health center, plus my kids have been on Medicaid). Others may know a lot better than me, but I don't really think you will find any help from the school system. Basically, once the parent gets the child's OCD diagnosis from a doctor and gives it to the school system, all that is done is that an IEP or a 504 Plan is made up to help accommodate the student in areas of schoolwork that OCD is affecting. No treatment for OCD at all so far as any therapy, etc. We also had no one close by who was experienced in treating kids with OCD so far as CBT/ERP therapies (and remember -I work at our mental health center) so I just read & read and posted here with millions of questions and muddled through it all on our own those first few years! I would try your local mental health center (other MHC's actually have experienced or willing-to-try OCD therapists) and see if they can help. Ours takes Medicaid (I think that's one of our main funding sources!). Your MHC might can refer you to other private providers to try also. Gotta go, keep us updated on how things are going! single mom, 3 sons , almost 15, with OCD, dysgraphia and HFA/Aspergers > My daughter is 5 and during the past month we are coming to the > realization that something is definately not right with her. Guest guest
Thanks for the input Chris. I actually made an appointment today with a psychotherapist who is local. She seemed knowledgeable about OCD treatment (although I am still learning a lot myself.)My husband and I will go tomorrow and then make a final decision. She was recommended very highly by a close friend who has been seen by her. When I asked about prescribing medication, she said she couldn't but that my pediatrician might be able/willing to do that. Any suggestions on questions to ask? Also, I did talk to the school system and you are right they didn't seem like they would be helpful to my daughter (not what she really needs.) We began homeschooling for many other reasons a few months before the OCD began. I was a little frustrated that the Special Ed Director told me that because we were homeschooling that they were not required to provide services for our daugher. That doesn't seem right. Thanks for your input. Heidi > > My daughter is 5 and during the past month we are coming to the > > realization that something is definately not right with her. Guest guest
Heidi, I think we have an article or two in the FILE section of our group that might be about choosing a therapist. The OCD Foundation site might have one too. There are a couple articles on therapists at this link, plus lots of OCD info you might find helpful. http://www.homestead.com/westsuffolkpsych/Articles.html One thing, if I word this correct(!), is to ask " Do you treat OCD with CBT and ERP? " They should know just what CBT and ERP are; plus the answer should be " yes. " Relaxation, talk and other therapies don't help OCD (though if there are some other issues to deal with also it can help with those). Let us know how the appt went, hope it goes well!! > > > Thanks for the input Chris. I actually made an appointment today > with a psychotherapist who is local. Guest guest
Kathy, It really depends on the state. In Michigan, there are 2 ways to homeschool. You can chose not to register and have no governmental intervention, no services like speech and no reporting to the state as a homeschooler. Or you can register. Then you must have a teachers certificate or claim a religious exemption to having one. This way you can get services. So you see, it really depends on wehre you live. I don't think it is true that your school has no obligations toward your daughter because you homeschool. If this is a tax-supported public school they are responsible for your child's education whether you choose to homeschool or not. I suggest you call your state education office if you want to follow up on this. Time and again listmembers have been told this or similar, and it has turned out the school representative was wrong.
