I found this site about SSRI's causing this grinding of the teeth.

http://www.stevedds.com/bruxism.htm

I personally was on Celexa at one point. I had the teeth grinding during the

day, and I couldn't control it. Anyway, apparently this is a side effect of

SSRI's.

Grinding teeth

My 12 year old daughter has OCD and is in the process of a medication

change, weaning off Prozac and initiating ZOLOFT. She has just begun

to grind her teeth at night and I mean GRIND. Has any parent

experienced this with their child? If so, what was suggested.

My child did this alot, and very loudly, when transitioning up or down on an

SSRI. In all cases it eventually subsided--very much diminished, but she

still does it from time to time usually when her tics are waxing.

As far as suggestions, if it's an ongoing problem, a dentist can make an

appliance to wear at night. Also you can purchase those types of mouth

guards used by athletes for football.

I'm a tooth grinder and jaw clencher, and years ago my dentist made a bite

guard for me to wear at night, though I've never been very good about it

since I find it a little annoying.

Take care,

Kathy R. in Indiana

I personally grind my teeth and it is stress/anxiety related. I have worn my

left jaw joint so that I have osteoarthritis there now. I worry about my 10

yoa OCD daughter. She does her homework with 3-4 pieces of bubble gum at a

time. She sits straighter and writes better while chewing gum. We have also

tried the non-toxic tubing that she can chew at school. I made a necklace with

it and a pencil topper. She would rather put the whole thing in her mouth to

chew, though. in Houston

I " clench " my jaw and it is also stress related it seems. I can tell

when I've been doing it in my sleep (jaw sore) and these past years

I've found myself doing it during the day and have to make myself

relax.

Regarding meds, I have read where some meds will cause the grinding.
