Kellie, Is Morgen on any medication or other 'natural' remedy? Lexi, 12,

weighs less than 70#, so I'm planning to go no higher than 10grams.

Thougts on this dosage anyone?

Lexi is on Prozac while we're trying inositol, so our results won't be

conclusive one way or the other since I won't know which is working.

Since Lexi has been on Prozac, she is experiencing fewer thoughts and her

depression is slowly lifting. It has been four weeks since beginning

Prozac; I was hoping for quicker results.

Naive and impatient,

cristey

Hi Cristey,

Yes, we'd all like the meds to work quickly!! :) Some people do get

lucky and notice positive changes pretty soon. But you need to give

the medication a good 8-12 weeks to see if there will be any benefits

(or how much benefit), and I'd at least give it a good 8

weeks " after " reaching the targeted dosage.

Make sure your doctor knows she's on inositol too, as he'll probably

not want to raise the Prozac dose to an amount she'd be taking

without the inositol; don't want too much of a serotonin " boost " as

that can be a serious problem also. If taking an SSRI, the inositol

should just be used to sort of augment/increase the SSRI effect, not

replace it.

Just my thoughts!

Morgen is only on Inositol now. Starting in January 2004 she was on

Zoloft (stopped due to side effects), and then Effexor and

Risperdal. In May I decided to take her off the Effexor/Risperdal

because of lack of confidence in pdoc, dd's mood changes, concern

about side effecs, and worsening OCD symptoms.

I am no expert and agree with that if you have a pdoc that

will work with you, the best solution is working with that doctor to

decide what medications (including natural remedies) might be best

and right to try for your daughter.

The article I read indicated you can use both your regular SSRI and

Inositol together without interaction or overdosing, but I also feel

it will be difficult to know which drug/medicine is helping if you

are adjusting both the inositol and the Prozac at the same times, or

if you have not been at the optimum levels for at least 4 weeks.

I know the frustrations you feel in wanting a quick help for your

daughter. But unfortunately meds seem to be one more time-consuming

puzzle that we get introduced to when we enter the world of OCD.

Good luck.

My daughter has enjoyed posting to Lexi on the kid's site!

Huda,

I can tell the medicine issue weighs on you, and that you really

want to do what is best for your son. So, he is already a step

ahead.

I decided to try Inositol because we were not having success with

anything else, and I had read posts about success with Inositol.

I think you should write down your concerns and talk to your son's

doctor about them the next time you visit. If you still feel uneasy

about the types of medication he has perscribed, ask yourself why.

If you have good reasons for concern and have not gotten adaquate

answers, I think you should look for another pdoc. Although many

still do not want to discuss anything but prescription medications,

other doctors are more open to trying alternatives. Post back about

your progress in the OCD medicine maze, and I will post about our

results with Inositol, as we progress.
