Carol,

I'm new to the list, but one question i have before answering anything would be is your sister's husband, the dairy farmer, in a large commercial dairy or a small organic one? that would make the world of difference. i'm under the impression that most dairies wash the udders before milking, but apparently not. you can also assure her that the milk is tested daily from most of the raw dairies and there are virtually no bacteria in them. you are also conferred some immunity from your raw milk to build up your immune system in the even that some bacteria slip in one day (they probably would catch it if testing). someone else who's got more facts please chime in.

Dear List:

I am writing to you from Northern California. I have long been interested in health and because raw milk has been available here, I have been drinking it for several years. I have recently begun using it in making kefir. A friend recently emailed me that she thought maybe the raw milk I drink is unsafe. Additionally, my sister, who is married to a dairy farmer, said she would be hesitant to drink raw milk because the udders are so dirth when they milk the cows. I realized I don't know how to address their concerns and thought I would check in here to see what I could learn. Thanks!

I get raw goats milk, but the people I get it from go through strick, stringent cleaning process of both the goat and themselves before they milk. I just thought everyone would go through some sort of process to avoid contamination, and then they cool it immediately.

I'm also in No. CA and recently went to visit Organic Pastures in

Fresno. They are the major raw milk supplier in No. CA, if not all

of CA. Their methods of milking and clean up are very precise. The

udders are wiped clean before and after milking. Before being let

back to pasture the udders are dipped with a substance that helps

keep them clean even when they are dragged in the mud. After milking

they are then allowed to feed to keep them standing up so that

substance can dry on the teat. They try to keep them up for at least

1 hr. for that reason. They go through this treatment twice a day

without fail. I was told by the owner, Mark McAfee, that the milk is

tested/questioned by the PTB quite a bit. Once, they even put

pathogens in the milk just to show the PTB what would happen.

Apparently the raw milk wouldn't allow anything to grow, and in fact,

killed of what was put in. This dairy, and I'm sure all raw dairies,

are quite different from the confinement dairies. Cows are not

treated the same at all. If you are close to Fresno I would

encourage you to tour their facilities. It is quite interesting and

a lot of fun.
