Hi. I'm new to this as well. My son is about your daughter's age

and was diagnosed with OCD this year. The Obsessive Compulsive

Foundation (?) may be able to help you find appropriate resources in

your area. I don't know the website offhand, but you should find it

easily enough with a web search. Welcome to the group. I have

found this board to be very helpful and supportive.

Thank you so much Becky for pointing me in the right direction. I

appreciate your help.

Hi ,

My son , 15, has always had a difficult time explaining to me

some of his OCD behaviors/feelings. But for him it all boiled down

to having to do something to " keep something bad from happening to

him " and he had to get a " just right " feeling. His OCD seemed to pop

up at the beginning of 6th grade; he's now in 9th.

From the things you mentioned about your daughter, sounds like OCD to

me, the counting and touching, etc.

Being able to " see " 's compulsions and what he was doing was

easier for me than the times he didn't seem to have any " physical "

type behaviors but a lot more going on internally; or some

compulsions that seemed to be delayed by some thoughts going thru his

head or something. For instance with the touching or having to

repeat something (until it felt " right " ), that was easier for me to

understand. Now the times he would cry and maybe have a meltdown

because he was " looking " at something or seemed to have something

going on in his head and couldn't verbalize it to me, that was hard

for me. I wanted to know just " what " was going thru his head.

There are some great sites on the internet with information. The OCD

Foundation website has a list of good books that you can read (or buy

there or at a local bookstore or perhaps your library has them). The

OCD Foundation site is I think at http://www.ocfoundation.org

I believe someone already directed you there to ask about finding

someone experienced with OCD in your area.

Lighthouse Press also has a list of books at:

http://www.lighthouse-press.com/

Look at the " free resources " page at Lighthouse, there are some

articles you can read on OCD.

One more good site is:

http://www.tourettesyndrome.net/ocd.htm

You'll read/learn a lot about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and also

Exposure & Response Prevention. Also about medications that can be

used to help if needed.

(((hugs))) I know how tough it is to watch your child be miserable,

but things WILL get better. I hope you can find an experienced

therapist to help. We had no one near who was experienced, so I just

read & read & read and asked lots of questions in this group (which

has been my BEST support) and we SOMEhow managed on our own.

Although I'm sure it would have been much better and faster if " mom "

wasn't the therapist, plus I'm too much a pushover! ;) At any rate,

is doing really well now, thankfully. And your daughter will

also reach that point, there IS a light ahead!

Keep us updated!
