Guest guest
Hi Kathy, I would call the school district and talk to the person in charge of special ed busing. I had some trouble when started taking the bus and it took 3 calls to get it worked out. Maybe if the aide has to leave the bus the driver will need to stand in the aisle and watch the children to make sure they are safe. It also helped when I sent something with to do on the bus. I used to send s Leap Pad with a book in his backpack. His school aide would give it to him to hold before he got on the bus this way he wasn't so bored. is also in second grade and some of the work is to hard. We just modify it at home (if its a word search I white out some of the letters to reduce the field of reference etc.) and write a note saying finished with help. After a full day of school homework is very hard but we try and have a really good reward that he can have when it is done. This tends to speed things up.. Last year spent 1/2 day in the self contained room and 1/2 day in regular ed. and your right even the teacher admitted that he was working so beneath is potential but at the time his behaviors kept him out of the reg ed classroom. I gave it that year to get his behaviors in line and really just let him get used to going to school but we did all academic home therapy so he could still progress. This year he is happy to go to school and he can do most of the work except conceptual things and his reading comprehension is low. They take him out of class for reading into a group of K-1st grade readers who work at his level. That way he is still with typical peers and he can still feel successful. I hope this helps. Its very hard dealing with the school system- I've learned that you just have to bug them and not go away. If you feel he is not making the progress he should make sure they know and you can demand and IEP review at any time. I can see my son saying the same thing about homework all finished. They just dont have the attention span after such a challenging day at school. I just wish they would challenge my son more. He has been doing the same stuff since he was three and now he is seven. Enough already is what I say. He is capable. It is a shame I have to spend more money with testing to prove it . I feel school should be teaching him. in A regular classroom I wouldnt have to prove his capablity. They just dont know how to teach a child that is nonverbal. Did you see my previous post? Would you continue to send your son on the bus? Thanks for helping me.
