Guest guest
Dear Mr. Gavino: Back in 1990, Seifert suggested a target guideline value for TVOC of 300 micrograms per cubic meter. In this Guideline, the definition of TVOC refers tp tje sum of individual VOCs separated and quantified by a gas chromatographic technique. I hope this helps, W. Bearg, PE, CIH Consultant in IEQ Concord, MA -------------- Original message -------------- I have some projects in which we have been asked to evaluate Total VOC concentrations within office buildings. Passive sampling was employed and using charcoal tubes. I am looking for current standards or recommendations to be used for comparison; either threshold values or target concentrations. This is what my research has turned up so far (much of it using the file directory for this group):- American Council of Government Industrial Hygienists recommends standards - ASHRAE Pub. 62-1989 has recommended using one-tenth of the ACGIH standards- The Indoor Air Quality Association recommends a Threshold Value of 0.67 ppmUnfortunately, I don't have access to the referenced ACGIH, ASHRAE, or IAQA standards or pubs at this time. My results, of course, would be provided in mass/volume format. Any help would be appreciated.FAIR USE NOTICE:This site contains copyrighted material the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by the copyright owner. Guest guest
Dear Geo Gavino (alias), With the help of IEQ List subscribers, we were able to identify earlier this Spring a number of information resources on Total VOCs including guidelines from Germany, Canada and Japan. Please visit the " Total VOC Corner " at the http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/iequality/files/ site. Additional information resources (web sites) are accessible at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/iequality/links Please note that you need to be registered with to access these! Guest guest
When the badges or tubes are extracted and the extract is analyzed by GC/FID, a fingerprint of the volatile organics is obtained. In addition to being able to sum the chromatographic areas and calculate a TVOC, educated guesses can be made about the specific VOCs present, based on column conditions and elution times. Of course, if GC/MS is used, then the individual VOCs can probably be identified by elution times and mass spectra.
