Dear Mr. Gavino:

Back in 1990, Seifert suggested a target guideline value for TVOC of 300 micrograms per cubic meter. In this Guideline, the definition of TVOC refers tp tje sum of individual VOCs separated and quantified by a gas chromatographic technique.

When the badges or tubes are extracted and the extract is analyzed by

GC/FID, a fingerprint of the volatile organics is obtained. In addition

to being able to sum the chromatographic areas and calculate a TVOC,

educated guesses can be made about the specific VOCs present, based on

column conditions and elution times. Of course, if GC/MS is used, then

the individual VOCs can probably be identified by elution times and mass

spectra.
