Guest guest
That is very funny! When I went on the diet, I also felt an amazing calm come over me, but giving up those vegies was hard. The South Beach Diet is the new version of Atkins with fruit and veg, (I just picked it up at Costco $14.29) and yes, I do remember reading something in all my research about the carbs and blood sugar ... if you could stabilize them, it was better for the brain chemistry. I am not a doctor, but the MD who teaches our behavior class is a sweetheart, I will print out your e-mail and show him, next monday. jrobharper wrote: I truly thought it was wishful thinking on my part. I am the mother of a 15 yr old with OCD. It is such a burden for anyone to carry, but I think particularly for the teenager as the others are constantly judging and not afraid to let anyone know they are different. Anyway, I have lost quite an amount of weight on the Atkins diet. My daughter didn't have very many extra pounds on her, but there were a few(less than ten) that she gained after starting on Reperidol (sp?). She decided to go on the Atkins diet with me to see if she could get rid of a few pounds before it got out of hand. I noticed a significant difference in her OCD after about a week (?), maybe two weeks. She was so calm. School seemed to go much more smoothly for her. Her intrusive thoughts seemed to be almost non-existant. Does anyone know where I can read literature on why this would help her OCD? Is there any other diets or can this one be modified? It bothers me for her not to be able to have vegetables and fruit. Will we get the same affect? Any suggestions on where I can read more would be great! Thanx, Kay jrobharper@... Guest guest
Hi Kay, has your daughter been tested for food allergies? I wonder if the Atkins diet inadvertently removed some offending foods from her diet? We learned early on that dairy products seemed to worsen Kel's OCD symptoms and tics. Removing this from her diet resulted in an improvement of her symptoms within just a few days, and later we found oranges also caused her symptoms to worsen. My daughter has environmental allergies and some sort of reactivity to dairy though her results on the tests are inconsistent. More recently we found that some artificial food dyes tend to increase Kel's ticcing. I'm not sure which colors though so we just try to avoid them all. Whenever Kel " cheats " at school and eats colored candy, I can usually tell because that evening she is agitated and ticcing, and she will usually confess to having eaten Pixie stix or whatever on the bus. Your daughter could take her time coming off the Atkins diet, adding one vegetable or fruit at a time and waiting a few days for a reaction. This way if only one or a few worsen her symptoms again, she can avoid just those rather than all fruits and vegetables. It may also have been the increased protein intake on Atkins that helped her symptoms? My daughter is most stable when she is eating protein, back when her symptoms were really bad she wouldn't eat meat and once she improved (via meds) to the point that she could, I remember her symptoms seemed to ease somewhat. I still encourage her to have protein especially at breakfast, it seems she has lower symptoms and a better day when she does. There are a variety of diets suggested for people with various brain disorders. I don't think most doctors or dietiticians think much of this, but if something as simple as adding or taking away a few foods helps, I say go for it! :-) Take care, Kathy R. in Indiana ----- Original Message ----- > I truly thought it was wishful thinking on my part. Guest guest
Is this the diet that eliminates carbs? I'm thinking that carbs affect the serotonin levels too.... I know some on the South Beach Diet have talked about how much better, more energetic they feel. That diet also eliminates carbohydrates. is on what I call an " all carb " diet. He just would literally have nothing left if I eliminated them; that and if I eliminated certain types of sugar. I really wish he didn't have a problem with texture and chewing! If any of this affects OCD, as I know it affects moods, depression, etc., then I guess is destined to keep OCD. SIGH! Perhaps since the diet can help with anxiety (from what I've read you feel more relaxed....), that might be helping with the stress/OCD. > I truly thought it was wishful thinking on my part. Guest guest
Thanks Judy, I'll keep that in mind for . I already know it'd have to be vanilla flavored only! > Have you tried Ensure and Boost? No texture, and many of our kids get their protein and vitamins in this form. > > Judy > Re: OCD and Atkins diet > > > Is this the diet that eliminates carbs?
