Guest guest
Crime is there but more in inner cities. I presume that most places have their pockets but we have been lucky that bury is very safe. Often at night we have forgotten to lock our conservatory door and nothing happens. As everywhere - where there is poverty there is crime. In the UK we are all obliged to have car insurance if you want to drive. An idea of premium will let one know the crime rate in the area.. it is directly proportional. Like I had friends in Manchester in hospital flats but the home insurance people would not even consider them as that was a high crime area. Bury is closer to Ipswich/Cambridge. U r correct. But for our Indian shopping etc we go to London as in London there are more Indian shops whereas in Cambridge/Ipswich there are more Asian shops (paki run). We try to support Indian outlets/produce wherever possible. Before anyone says I am biased let me tell you that we learnt this from our Paki friends who would buy only 'pearl' basmati and not 'tilda' as pearl is from Pakistan. so we buy natco etc. also I work in bury st Edmunds. we go to London only for pleasure... shopping, mandir, khana. just a small correction- it is all in miles not kms. also in terms of time to get from Kothrud where my parents live to Laxmi road it takes about 30 minutes by auto but Cambridge which is 30 miles away (about 48 kms ) it takes me 30 minutes!! So distances don't really matter. The other day nadu visited me for lunch. He is approximately 125 miles away (am I correct nadu) here when one works - Monday - Friday you really work. no breaks etc. but the weekend/evenings are entirely yours unless you r on call. there are advantages to living abroad...but there are disadvantages too the biggest one is u r always a foreigner and I personally find it difficult to integrate into the social fabric. anyway so much for now. could go on forever about this...as can all of u settled abroad. With regards Lakshmi Prasad (lp1960@... ) Geography lesson of UK Malini, that was just super. We got a good idea of what UK is like. Just poring over the atlas can never give you such a view. You did not mention the crime quotient. Is it higher in the towns or cities? And are non-whites specially targeted sometimes? A doubt which arises in my mind is if you commute from a town to the city (say London, or Ipswich), does not that eat up the time you would rather spend with your kids and husband? Or is all quality time reserved for the weekends only? I personally have been lucky enough to live above my hospital, so I cannot imagine being away from my family for too long, but I guess you get used to crèches and day care centres. I think Bury St. Edmunds is nearer Ipswich (35 kms) or even Norwich (55 kms), than London, which is nearly 80+ kms. That must be some commuting that you do! Kishore Shah 1974 PS: For quite some time, this topic is being carried out in mail with the subject " Sadhana's accusations!! " I thought that we should give Sadhana a break. She must be quite tired now of accusing for so long! PPS: Ashok, do you live far from the city hub / lake-front of Chicago? How do you cope with the commuting problem? ------------------------------ Website: www.mgims.org ------------------------------

Because the problem is not with the people......but the politicians....who mislead... We were all born to the same soil....Like Nilanjana points out....at the hospital she can comingle with our Pakistani colleagues... Actually from my patients and my colleagues, I am very comfortable with people from Karachi in particular...because they almost sound like they are from Bombay... Our first babysitter was Pakistani......and they always identified themselves as Punjabi Pakistani.... Here there is lot of effort between the Indians and Pakistanis building bridges...........animosity is almost nonexistent amongst professionals... So the cabbie ...you talk about Sadhana...its none of his fault....its the politicians who fire up these passions for their own selfish needs... I used to think that India and Pakistan should not have been divided....but now I feel it was for the good....Atleast they got part of the Indian subcontinent where they are the majority...and did not have to contend being the minority in India forever... Whatever happens happens for the good... We just have to learn to live as friendly neighbors.... You all know how the Mohajirs were treated....Lot of Pakistanis I interact with have lot of regard for India....Some of them are mohajirs who fondly remember their Indian roots...
