Dear Ashok

<In general when I am in a gathering I feel embarassed to point

Amar Chitra kathas as the source of my knowledge on a particular

topic>

I don't see why you have to be embarrassed about ACK as your

knowledge base. I know most parents admonish their kids when it

comes to comics, but these were different. And they are

surprisingly vivid in their depiction of both history and

mythology. Your brain registers it so wonderfully well.

Actually last year when 'Kaun banega Crorepati " ( the Indian

version of who wants to be a millionaire) was on air, I used to

get all those quetions on Puranaas and Upanishads and the ancient

stories right, surprising the rest of my friends. And my only

source of information were Anant Pai's glorious treasure troves.

Dear Malini and Ashok,

<What better source than

to have fun as you are learning? ACKs r great....Malini>

<..AMKs as good source of info - nothing wrong except they are a little

juvenile..!!..Ashok>

I don't think they are juvenile because I read them when I was a kid. The

right time and the right presentation. And in any case I would have never

managed to wade through pages of Sanskrit or dreary translations .....or

even know that such wondrous tales even existed but for ACKs.

Yes, in the present times, our Doordarshan serials have tried to take their

place. But except for Mahabharat which was well characterized and depicted,

and Ramayan which was popular, the rest haven't been able to attract

audiences. And if I can read a great story in 30 minutes why do I have to

see it drag onto 13 episodes?

I know there are serials on Ramayana and Mahabharata. I did try to get the

kids interested in the stuff... (our culture/heritage/religion etc etc)There

were 2 problems.

1. The language was so flowery and my kids do not have a great grasp of

hindi. So at times giving a literal translation was slow and did not make

sense. The serials though having a lot of gimmicks (ala harry potter) did

not grip them.

2. The concept, ideas. ideologies were outdated (as would be expected for

our epics) so they could not relate to what was on TV.

But on our visits to India I get them ACKs they enjoy reading them and we do

it together. they really enjoy reading those books. So there is a lot to be

said for ACKs.

Malini
