Guest guest Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 , I almost always dilute my KT because I brew it until most, if not all of the sugar is used up. Sometimes I use water, other times I use tea. Its actually quite interesting how adding a flavored tea can alter the taste. Just make sure the tea is no more than baby-bottle temperature or you might kill the good guys in the KT. -Lana > > I know it is made > with tea, but i didnt know if I could dilute it with a little tea to > build myself up to drinking it ? Guest guest Posted May 19, 2006 Report Posted May 19, 2006 I am really knew to this as well. but mine tastes a bit like apple cider -can you describe your taste?. Rita kombucha... tastes yucky Hey, Im really new to this. I learned about Kombucha from another group I am with, and joined up here, because you focus completely on kombucha where as, they really focus on many things. So, heres my problem. Seeing as I am new to this, I bought some already made kombucha from a trusted source. So, I know its good. But, I tasted it yesterday, and I have no idea how Im going to stomach the stuff. lol... Not to be rude, but it just tasted awful. So, the question being... Are you supposed to dilute it at all? If not, then how do you acquire a taste for it? Some others had said it would taste like 'tea'. But, it didnt taste a thing like tea !!! I know it is made with tea, but i didnt know if I could dilute it with a little tea to build myself up to drinking it ? If not tea, is there anything it is safe to 'mix' with in order to get it down the hatch? Thanks So Much ! ~ Quote

Rita , don't be put off after trying KT for the first time. If it was very vinegary you can still drink it diluted with water or juice. With fizzy water it tastes like dry lemonade - very refreshing ... and you will still have the health benefits! I let lots of people try my KT which is not at all sour, but more like Rita's apple-cidery one. In fact, it's so nice, I can't stop drinking it .... ;-) The sad truth, however, is that many get so prejudiced and closed-minded (I'm sure You're NOT) that they stop at the first hurdle and don't carry on to discover the eventual delights and health benefits of the marvellous Kombucha Tonic. You can influence the taste of your KT enormously by the different teas you use. I find that tastewise the most successful combination is with about 3/4 of green tees (try Jasmine green Mhhh!) and a quarter of Oolong or black Earl Grey tea. I even sneak the odd fruity tea bag (e.g. strawberry and vanilla fool) but very sparingly.... just enough to give it a fruity edge and friendly zing. You will also gain experience how to balance your brew properly with its yeast and bacteria side. http://www.geocities.com/kombucha_balance/ It WILL take a bit of time and patience to get there, but it's well worth it, I can assure you. most kombuchaly, Margret:-) -- +---------------------------------------------------------------+ Minstrel@... <)))<>< http://www.therpc.f9.co.uk <)))<>< http://www.AnswersInGenesis.com http://www.lamblion.com/ +---------------------------------------------------------------+ Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart. The optimum acids for health are present (depending on temperature) between day 7 and 14. The art of producing nice tasting Kombucha lies with excluding the yeast that gathers on the bottom of the brewing container and taking the starter from the top of the vessel which is bacteria rich. Too much yeast (and it naturally tends to predominate if you let it) makes for a sour, unpleasant tasting brew. The aim needs to be for a pleasantly acidic brew that still has a sweet edge to it... a bit like good dry cider (but without the alcohol, of course). I thought, oh my Lord, how can these people think this tastes better than tea ! lol... and they told me to try giving it to my kids ! HA HA HAHa .... You couldnt hold them down and force them to drink it if its gonna taste like vinegar ! *chuckling* I thought everyone was NUTS ! I didnt realize they were 'mixing' it. Now, I feel a little better, and dont feel like Im loosing my mind. My husband has it 3/4 Kombucha, 1/4 water because he gets more water that way and it is more refreshing for him. ,,,but I, alas, much prefer it neat with the water separate. But then, my KT isn't like vinegar - I don't brew it that long. Mine tastes like cider. Mhhhhhh.... > Now, I feel a little better, and dont feel like Im loosing my mind. Good! The thing is, when you brew it at home you stop brewing when it tastes good to you. The commercial KT is very strong and intense and is a very good product, but frequently people do need to dilute it. Just know that homemade is very different, and you have control over how strong (tart) to let it get. --V ~~~ There is no way to peace; peace is the way ~~~~ --A.J. Muste Quote
Guest guest Posted May 24, 2006 Report Posted May 24, 2006 Hi , It is personal prefference. I believe the most important part is...it is a live culture, but some preffer it to have a flavor from fruit, sugar or honey. I would advice pasturizing the honey if using it to culture the tea, so the honey bacteria does not over take the kombucha culture, that you are trying to make happen. -Audrey <snippet> I thought that part of the point was to not have the sugar in these drinks? What do you sweeten your tea wiht? When I make tea anymore, I use honey, but I read not to mix honey with KT. > ~ > Quote
