Tony,

If you're looking for the one indicating the 327% increase, I found it at

Dr. Mercola's site. From there I think you might be able to track it down

even further to the original publication:

http://www.mercola.com/2002/jul/24/drug_usage.htm

US Drug Usage Explodes

Physicians are prescribing medications at a far faster clip than they did

two decades ago, a trend that is likely to result in a doubling of drug

spending in the next 5 years.

Between 1985 and 1999, the prescribing rate rose 34%, from 109 to 146

prescriptions per 100 visits, the study found. All major therapeutic

classes, except for microbial agents such as penicillin and tetracycline

(which fell 12%) experienced increases during the study period.

About two thirds of the increase can be accounted for by an aging patient

population and more complicated medical conditions, the research found. But

other factors, such as the availability of new drug formulations to treat

chronic conditions, wider health insurance and drug coverage, and growth of

direct-to-consumer advertising are also believed to contribute to the

increased prescribing rate.

The trend is likely to continue as baby boomers grow older and scientific

discoveries lead to better treatment of acute and chronic conditions,

concludes study author Catharine Burt, chief of the ambulatory care

statistics branch of the National Center for Health Statistics at the

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The analysis is based on data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care

Survey, a survey of office-based physicians conducted by the National Center

for Health Statistics. The survey captures all " drug mentions, " meaning

prescriptions, over-the-counter preparations and immunizations ordered,

supplied or administered during a visit.

Psychiatrists had the largest increase in drug mentions, jumping to 178

drugs per 100 visits in 1999, from 82 per 100 visits in 1985.

Just six therapeutic classes accounted for 80% of the increase in the

overall drug mention rate. Those classes include central nervous system

drugs, hormones, respiratory medications, pain relief agents,

metabolics/nutrients and cardiovascular-kidney drugs.

Antidepressants accounted for 13.5% of the increase in overall ambulatory

drug prescribing. Cholesterol-lowering drugs and heart medications called

ACE inhibitors were also top contributors.

For seniors, the largest increase was for drugs affecting the blood and

blood-forming tissues, which jumped 187% during the study period. For adults

45 to 64, metabolic drugs, including cholesterol-lowering medications, had

the largest increase in drug mentions, up 109%.

Central nervous system drugs had the highest increase for children, up a

startling 327%. The study finds that the attention-deficit/hyperactivity

disorder drug Ritalin was among the most frequently mentioned drugs in this

class during children's visits in 1999.

Tony,

So sorry you are feeling so tired. Hang in there you are an inspiration to

me daily. I have a friend who is HIV positive and has been so for many

years. (10 now) She has since married to a wonderful gentleman who has know

about her situation from the start. They celebrated their 3 anniversary on

7-31-02. She also has adopted your attitude and it surely has paid off for

her. She said at the start that she was not going to let this thing beat her

and goes about her business normally.

I know how draining the meds are and all you must do to stay positive. I am

always

ready to read your posts because they are so up lifting.

Hang in there. Tomorrow will bring a new day that will hopefully find you

feeling much better.

Always in my prayers,

Dear ,

But we have AIH because our immune system

is defective and overactive. So, by taking the meds, are we more “normal”

like everyone else who does not have autoimmune disease? Or are we immuno-suppressed enough to make us vulnerable to West Nile? I know

doctors try to give us as little as possible of the meds so that we can fight

off infection while still fighting the disease.

Also, only 3-15 % of the mosquitos carry it, but that seems like a high number to me.

I don’t even want to use mosquito repellent as that is somewhat toxic too.

My doctor does say it is OK for me to use repellant.

Dear :

I know we have a problem with WestNile here in Memphis. Matter of

fact, I was informed today that some agency is going door to door

tomorrow looking around everyone's homes for standing water. If you

have standing water then you can be fined! I have an ornamental pond

(not so ornamental right now) and numerous bird baths. I guess I'll

be fined out the wazoo!!! My question is how do we protect

ourselves? Can repellent chemicals be bad for those of us with AIH?

But then again, West Nile can be too, so who knows....

Dump the bird baths quickly! That way they can't fine you! But, if you did have standing water, you would probably already be sick!

Good luck

Dear Rhonda,

My neighbor allowed his house to just “fall

down” a few months ago. The town ordered him to remove the debris. Well,

they did and left several huge holes in the ground that filled up with water.

It was a mess and dangerous. I took pictures but no one would do anything about

it. So I went out there with some cooking oil and poured it on the water. Sort of a mini oil slick. I was hoping the thin layer of oil

would suffocate any mosquito larvae in there. I was afraid my well would be

contaminated too.

Finally they started building another home

there.

Dear Tony,

I'm so sorry to hear of your poor tazz. I know how you adored him and how much joy he brought. Animals have a special sense to know what you need and are so loyal! I know I worry when our little JJ escapes from the house as he has no sense of danger - he's so trusting.

I think of you often and every night when I see the first star:) We are with you as you continue your journey.

Love,

Dear Tony,

GO TO SPAIN!!!!!! Of course, you should. At this point in your life you need to choose what will make you happiest. There is no telling if the treatment will improve your health or cause it to decline where you couldn't consider a trip. You have tried and worked hard to improve your health and try experimental medications for the good of all of us. I thank you for all you've done and would be sad for you to miss your trip.

I still think of you with every first star I see at night. Your spirit soars even as your body weakens. Go to Spain and celebrate life and the beauty you will see there!

Dear Tony,

MMMMM Bread pudding sounds delicious! I'll smell it all the way here to Seattle! And also feel the warmth of your friends when you gather in thanksgiving.

I know what you mean about wanting to share what you can. I, too, have had many wonderful friends come forward to help and stay by me and new friends that have shared of their time and kindness. I couldn't do my ususal types of activities and I knew they didn't really want me to send another thank-you card so I let them know that in their honor I am knitting hats for babies a the hospital where my transplant will be. Knitting is something I can do while sitting and relaxing (and trying not to eat!) Whilie I am knitting, I think of all the kindnesses that have been shared with me and the beauty of the baby who begins the cycle of life. My friends loved the thought and a few people have joined my in the baby hat giving.

I've been thinking about your trip to Spain. Can you tell us a little bit about where you are going and what you will see? That way we can be on the journey with you, too.

The stars have been shining brightly this week, Tony :)

Tony, neighbors had this happen last week following a power outage (we are in the country.) They said it had to do with the power company reconnecting 220 when it should have been 110. I didn't ask them anything more about it. The ruined equipment was the responsibility of the power company.

I'm looking forward to hearing all your Spain news. I'll be thinking of you. Harper

[ ] Hi !

Hello !

I'm sorry that is been a while since I posted a message here. I've been very sick at home. I'm trying very hard to fight all this that is coming my way and at the same time trying to build up my inmune system and its been quite a challenge. My birthday was last friday but I was too sick to even get out of bed so I just rested and sang happy birthday to myself. My second biopsy is schedule for this friday and hopefully by then I have been able to control my fever and heavy congestion. I'm going through a lot of heavy night sweats but that is common on the stage that I'm going through; I promise to come out of this soon !

Thank you for been my friends; I know right now my issues are not releated to the liver but having you here means so much to me.

I didn't get to plant that tree last spring but I'm looking forward in doing that this year.

Never forget that you are always in my heart !

God Bless You,

Love Always,

Tony

Hey Tony....

good to hear from you...

I am glad that you too are having some really nice weather....if you remeber my other son lives just outside of Atlanta...in Hiram....and he says the weather has been wonderful...slept on his deck the other night....

it is finally nice here too...nice and sunny....

It is nice to hear that someone actually enjoys just sitting outside and taking it all in....wish I had more time to do the same.....love those evenings when I can just sit on the deck and look at the sky...amazing...

Hope the your treatment tomorrow goes well and that you will be feeling well enough to plant your tree....

we just finally were able to dig in the ground that had been so frozen and covered with snow all winter...to get our Christmas tree in the ground...lol...a little late but looks great in the back yard....

enjoy your weekend...

and take care...
