Guest guest
See Tables 2, 3, and 5 on this link: http://dietary-supplements.info.nih.gov/factsheets/magnesium.asp When I said earlier that it was in our Files, I was wrong--it is in our Links section! Anyway, the first two charts have to do with daily intake, from food sources. They list something like 30 to 75 mg's a day, for his age range. Then table 5 talks about tolerable upper intake for SUPPLEMENTAL magnesium, which is what you would be " giving " orally, i.e. not occuring in natural food sources in his diet. So you want to check that chart. They say " Unlisted " for his age range, and so what I would do is look to see what can a 1 year old have, and then probably half-it, because it does then " jive " with what they show on tables 2 and 3... and I'm guessing he probably isn't getting that much magnesium from what he is eating but you should look at the labels and add it up and then figure out an amount and then I think you had a nurse or doc, you could ask them if it was OK, if you are unsure. So initially you started miralax and it seemed like a miracle, and now he is still taking miralax but it's not really working well... sounds too familiar! My son was like that, too. You could try the epsom salt baths daily but use a smaller amount per day... the magnesium is one benefit but sulfate is also another one and getting them daily can help, but you'd probably want to find out from Kim Payne on the cfparents or cfnutrition board how much epsom salt per day then--I'm assuming she had helped you with the epsom salt baths previously?? And if he still does a bottle, you could try one of the over the counter fibers or ask the pharmacist if they can order Malt Supex for you...it was not cheap. When I had used it with my kids, one bottle was expensive, unfortunately. But it's one of those things that really can work well for some kids. The parent mixes it in the bottle and it makes the formula look brownish but gives it a malt taste. W > > seems to be going up and down. The CF center said to give him an enema if he starts acting uncomfortable again. The constipation and eating less started when we left the hospital the last time in Feb. He's not really doing the Setevie wonder thing much anymore. I'm going to talk to the docs next week when we go to the clinic. Do you know how much mag. you would give a baby? I'm giving him 2-3 epsom salt baths a week. He poops in the tub so then I have to take him out and redo the whole thing because he's only been in there about 5 minutes when he does it, the little " stinker " !!!! > Kim > >
