Welllll, I guess you have to make the choice over which is the

lesser of two evils. Sinus surgery where they may have to cut away

some tissue ORRR, having the infection eat away the tissue for you,

and work it's way to your brain. That does happen, happened to my

daughter when she was 4 and doctors were insisting there was no

infection when they looked up her nose. Massive sinus infection was

finally revealed when I demanded a sinus xray. She spent 3 days in

the hospital. It had eaten it's way to her optic nerves and others

which caused her eye lid to droop and her pupil to dialate.

Also, I knew people that their teen age daughter ended up with a

sinus infection that spread all over her head and they had to peel

back her face to clean out the infection.

I wouldn't let it sit there to long if it is out of control. Like I

said my husband's spread from one cavity to 3 and they did do an MRI

to make sure it wasn't spreading to his brain. Personally, I would

opt for the surgery if I wasn't getting anywhere with known

treatments, but that is just me:} Husband feels waay better now, but

do find a very good surgeon.

think I contracted more infections on the table or in the office

getting suctions, dx procedures etc. I am a veteran. Four surgeries.

Have turned down as many surgeries as I have had and they want to do

more. Surgery has never helped me, not one bit and I think has made

the problem worse.

There's no way on gods green earth a couple of months of vancomycin

will take out staph epi in your sinuses. I watch staph epi become

vanco resistant after 8 days and frequently the following therapy

wins no new ground in your battles.The literature vanco comes with

tells them not to use it on it's own against staph epi.

Well, I am speaking from my own experience. Of course I may have to eat my words as my ENT doc is talking about another surgery if this round of Tobormycin doesn't work. It's a cipro -gentamicin -a couple of strange penicillin derivatives

that are active against pseudonomads, I would only be takling it

with good lab work as I see it turning and twisting too frequently

with drug choices being used for long periods- again without gain,

actually many drug choices will grow your infections.

Hi Marie,

I'm not a dr. either so my knowledge comes from

on-line sites such as webmd, healthnet, etc and what I

was told by 2 doctors. Concha bullosa are extra

ethmoid sinuses that have grown in in the wrong place.

They cause closed up air pockets in my case next to my

maxillary sinuses.

As a sufferer of chronic infection, mycoplasma, and a two time sinus

surgery victim, I would suggest exploring all avenues of medicinal

cure before going under the knife. In my case I found an allergist

that was willing to put me on long term clarithromycin for what he

suspected were atypical bacteria (very difficult to culture), but out

of ignorance stopped the treatment. Later, after finding an LLMD

(lyme literate MD), and getting a diagnosis of an atypical organism,

I was put on long term clarithromycin and other antibiotics for cwd

(cell wall deficient) organisms. My surgeries didn't work because

what I needed were the correct antibiotics. Before surgery, you

should get cultures. If cultures don't work, look for a doc that can

find cwd bacteria. Here is a link that will give you a basic glimpse

of what I am talking about. Although it doesn't say it can cause

sinusitis, it does say it can affect any organ.

Tony,

Thanks, and I agree. What I failed to mention is that the scant

reading that I got was from the swab, and yes, after the treatment,

and it showed it was still susceptible on antibiogram. I am guessing

this was contamination from a nose hair, swab coming out, because all

of the tissue samples were negative, which would show what's under

the mucosa.

A structural defect of the ethmoids must be removed for the frontals

to drain properly. If this is the case, I personally would get it

done. I got it done for less reason, in fact. However, what was

supposed to be a complete ethmoidectomy, was only partial on the ct

after surgery. It really made me mad. I felt like the ent lied to me.

I think he was scared to go all the way due to inexperience. Get an

excellent surgeon.

Thanks Tony for the reply. I did have a culture that showed psuedomos resistant to everything else I have taken. I am to take tobramycin nebulized for 21 days. I am not sure what you mean when you say twisting and turning (becoming resistant?)to frequently...Could you please make that more clear to me. , Sounds like you have structural defect . I never had that, my surgeries were for infection and sinus polyps, You may need to have this defect repaired surgically but get it in writing that they will do cultures when they are in there. The last surgery I had the surgeon promised to take cultures. When I came out from sedation I asked if he took cultures and he said no he had not. I was mad. So in spite of the surgeries the ENT docs are willing to keep stabbing in the dark to treat infections. I have done plenty of swabs and read plenty of reports and even

tried very hard to work out where all the mistakes stem from in lab

work. theres no such thing as no growth 99 %yield bacteria the lab

person is a mushroom and has no idea half your head is infected.

serious psaeudonomads infection.tobramicin may work for a short time

but with a second agent you have a better chance.

flagyl sort of works the first couple of tmes and then people seem

to do it for years and it's a no gain situation IMO.basically take

combo's that hit the mark and improve you. i feel being told to do

this and that for clamydia candida or lyme is a fickle exercise

rarely bearing fruit.the ones that keep you feeling great are also

the onews allowing your body a chance to heal the mess created.\

that's quite a horrifying story. I hope your daughter

and husband are ok. I won't bore everyone with every

detail, but there were times when I thought I wouldn't

survive and began to rewrite my will. I'm much better

now (7 months later) but my head and ears are still

all clogged up and I have the constant feeling that

something is clogged in my left cheek. I've already

had several sinus scans and 1 head MRI and they all

showed the same thing. 3 ENTs told me the same thing,

including 1 bigshot who was in NY Magazine + NJ

Monthly. They didn't feel that the fluid was enough to

have surgery, but that because of the fluid and the

concha bullosa, would only perform it as the last

resort if I still wasn't getting better. None of them

was in a rush to do surgery. I also went to a 4th ENT

and he was against it completely. I went for allergy

testing and a neurologist to rule out any other

problem. It's all sinus related. My current ENT seems

very good. Years ago was the Chief Resident at Albert

Einsteen in NY. He's a member of the American Board of

Otolarygology, has had no lawsuits in the last 5

years. But who really knows, sometimes you just have

to be lucky.

Tony,

Remember that our good ENT who cultures, contacted Stanford's

Physicians regarding untreatable pseudomonas and they recommended

nasal rinsing with Betadine (iodine). That could be a helpful

adjunct. But Psuedomonas is extremely difficult to eradicate. It

thrives in moist conditions. The Stanford docs actually advocated

lying on your back with head hanging over bed and applying betadine

with a douche bag. Personally, I think one of the nasal rinsing

systems, like the Hydropulse, which pulses as the same rate as the

sinus scillia, would be much easier. Or even a neti pot. But

whatever works.

You know our problems are bigger than just 2 pills a day and

whamo... fixed.Actually most of medicine and it's 2 pills for this 3

pills for that (heart disease,diabetes,etc) are just management

models of treatment, they don't cure.This is why you'll find us

trying anti inflammatory -antibacterial- anti feed the bugs

therapies.I basically think you gotta work on rinsing the sinuses

with whatever works for you and go in from all angles.Alternatives

are peeling back the face and scrapping out the mess and as you kno

there's a mess up there.
