I didn't know it until recently, but you can get mercury poisoning from eating paper! The internet is slow right now for me, but if you go to www.google.com and type in pica eating paper and mercury into the search box, then it pulls up a couple of sites that mention this: PicaPica is the persistent craving and compulsive eating of non-food substances. ... paint or paper containing mercury can cause symptoms of toxic poisoning. ... www.healthatoz.com/healthatoz/Atoz/ency/pica.jsp - 29k - Cached - Similar pages PicaOne theory to explain pica is that in some cultures, eating clay or dirt may help ... if the craved substance is toxic or contaminated with lead or mercury, ... kidshealth.org/parent/emotions/behavior/pica.html - 28k - Cached - Similar pages Zebra Card DI-006: paper pica(The cigarette-eating patient was a nonsmoker, and craved ashes specifically from ... Aside from mercury, the inks that are in the paper can be toxic, etc. He hasnt had > any magazines for few days. Day befor yesterday we got one in mail > and let him have it. He has been having problems with gi. Im > thinking that the paper could cause constipation/gi issues(he > usually spits out, but could be eating some). ****** Even if he is just chewing on the paper and spitting it out, it is still exposing him to mercury and other toxins. Don't allow him to do this anymore. The condition is called Pica, and you can google pica and constipation... on the autism boards usually supplementation of calcium and or a cal/mag combination can help with pica. It is important to also look at iron levels, too. Just seems any net searches I do on paper > is, eating disorders or written paper on is all that comes up, etc. **** Try using the term Pica in your searches. I did mention to gastro quite a while > ago and they was not concerned. **** That just makes me so mad. It is known that mineral deficiencies can be related to Pica and they should have ordered some testing when you told them he has pica! I just still have doubts, especially > since he hasnt had for awhile, now had a magazine, now backed up!!! > Magazines well no longer be in his hands, but I am still wanting > info/research on!! **** some inks can be heavy-metal based, and heavy metals do cause constipation. Also, cancer-causing agents can be found in paper-ink as well. Also, do any of you have a good yahoo support > group for constipation issues?? Jennie<>< **** Well, this board is one! LOL! However, there are other yahoo boards for constipation. This is probably the only one though that tries to present non-pharmaceutical options. I had belonged to some constipation boards on yahoo in the past and if I talked about the chemical nature of miralax I would get slammed...so be forewarned if you join some of those other boards that they don't want to hear about leaky gut, absorption of polyethylene glycol, etc. W
Guest guest
Also, oddly enough, I think it was the TV show about ER docs in Seattle that featured chelation-- a man had eaten his novel and had mercury poisoning and needed chelation. I may have the TV show mixed up with another but that was the subject anyhow, and it was on fairly recently...anyone see it? W > > > ******* PLEASE stop letting him eat paper.
