Cathryn, here is one source for a lot of info on various drugs, including

the anticonvulsants, in combination with thyroid hormone. Of course, this

one mentions only T4 and T3, not with Armour or other natural thyroid, but

we can generally get the picture with this article. If I can find more I'll

post more, just at random.

That pubmed article was very interesting on the effects of

anticonvulsants on thyroid function. My daughter is 9 and has

atypical Rett syndrome. She's been on vaporic acid (depakote) for

about 5 years now and came down with hypothyroidism about 2 1/2

years ago. Her neurologist doesn't see the connection. Do they not

believe the reports we read? Anyway, thanks for pointing that out.

Many doctors will only believe you when you take in sound evidence of this.

Copy the reports and any others that you can find concerning this and other

issues. They have a tendency to believe the results of sound studies more

than anything else, I think. Just my opinion, and it may be crucial that

you investigate this to the max.

I bet my MIL meant to write Actonel instead of Actorel. Does this make

more sense to you?

Thanks.

I'm not getting any results on a drug called Actorel. What is it

for? Also, Inderal LA (long-acting) is actually Propanalol, which

is a beta-blocking drug used for maintaining heart rhythym, blood

pressure, also used for migraine, but it is one of the main drugs given

for pulse rate of hyperthyroidism, and is well-known for blocking the

effects of thyroid hormone, especially in hyperthyroidism. I

believe that the Topamax is one of the ones with questionable effects on

thyroid hormone dispersion, that is an anticonvulsant. However I

don't find anything on it having to do with the thyroid hormones in the

drug company's own literature. Zyrtec seems to be great for some

people, but I tried it on two different occasions, and couldn't take it

because it gave me hypotension upon standing up and moving around

(extreme tiredness). It is made from changing the molecule on the

drug Hydroxyzine (spelling?), which is a very heavy duty antihistamine

used mostly for a tranquilizer or for itching. Does the Duratuss

have the anti-cough med in it called dextramethoraphan? If it does,

this one is not supposed to be good for anyone, let alone us thyroid

patients. She probably has to take the Warfarin at intervals (on

again and off again) to keep blood clots from forming in her circulatory

system, but, if she was taking thyroid hormone, that MIGHT or might not

have to be adjusted.

Actonel is to rebuild bone, and so far, I can't find anything on it related to either increase or decrease in thyroid hormone displacement. If I run across anything I'll give a holler.
