Starches are carbohydrates and microorganisms just feast on them. Imidazolidinyl urea is also known as Germall 115 from Sutton Labs and Nipa/Clariant have their version of it too. To incorporate this material into you product you will need to dry blend them using a Waring Blendor or Osterizer type mixer. Mix the preservatives with a portion of the drys and blend. You can now use a Mixmaster to mix all of the remaining drys with this portion with the preservatives. The formulation also calls for the addition of Methylparaben (0.10%), Propylparaben(0.05%), and Imidazolinidyl Urea(0.15%). I've got a sample of Sutton's Liquapar Oil and some Germall Plus liquid. My question is: does a dusting powder based on mostly starch (the only liquid addition being fragrance oil) need a preservative? If it does, would either of the preservatives I've got do? Next question, what would be the best way to combine the preservatives with the powder? (using household appliances?) thanks in advance! cheers, . Guest guest Posted August 3, 2001 Report Share Posted August 3, 2001 Thanks to both and I was wondering if I could use my liquid preservatives (germall plus liquid or liquipar oil) by spraying onto the powder and running it through a Waring Blendor or Osterizer type mixer.... then wondered if a blendor would mix it adequately..... I think I'll talk to Sutton Labs and see what they might recommend. Next question.... do sodium bicarbonate and kaolin clay fall into the same catagory as starches when it comes to preserving them in a powder formulation? thanks again guys! They can harbor the spores and when proper conditions are present those spores will propagate.
