Guest guest
At this point, I have no clue now what I'm doing wrong? Do I need to eliminate chemicals? add chemicals? I heated everything to the right temps & I still have little beads, there like little wax beads in the lotion. It's like the fat stage didn't emulsify or disperse completely. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank-you, Vaughn First Stage: Distilled water 87% Glycerin 3% Fat Stage: Steric Acid 3% Glyceryl Stearate 3% Cetylalcohol 2% Third Stage Triethanolamine 1% Last Stage Germaben II 1% Heat the fat stage in a double boiler until ingredients are melted to 70-75C. Heat the water stage in a double boiler to the same tempature 70-75C. Add the fat stage to the water stage in a steady stream beating all the time. When uniform in apperance slowly add the TEA 99 When the tempature has cooled to 45-40C. add the preservative.
Guest guest
Dear Vaughn, I have to wonder if your Stearic Acid is getting thoroughly melted. The Stearic Acid that I use is tiny wax granules. There have been times when I have added a bit more and the temps have not been sustained enough to melt them completely and my emulsion feels grainy. -Cyn vaughn wolfe wrote: > At this point, I have no clue now what I'm doing wrong? Guest guest
Vaughn, When you heat your batch everything must be to temperature and all of the fats and oils must be completely melted and clear. Another thing is that you should dilute the TEA in a portion of the water from the batch. TEA is a viscous liquid and it is difficult to get it all out of the vessel in which you weighed it. If you make a TEA phase for your batch using 1% TEA and 5% Water this will help. Stir the TEA solution well to insure that it is all mixed and in solution. I think that perhaps you lost too much TEA during this transfer and the batch is not emulsified because there was not enough TEA present. You can check this if you have access to a pH meter. The pH of your batch should be ~7.2. My guess is that it will be about 6.0-6.5 in which case it is not neutralized and emulsified. Guest guest
I would add the TEA to the water phase just before the oil phase addition (in particular before the stearic acid addition). This way you are forming the stearate at the same time as the GMS/oils are added and this should emulsify better.
