Vicki: I had not heard of this but will check it out - it sounds like the

studies were done on aging brains, but our kids' brains have a lot in common

with those. Thanks for the tip! Dr. JM

Vicki,

I wonder if it is like the prescription Carnitor(L-Carnitine). Our daughter just

started that last night. I've heard so many good results from RS kids. Our

daughter is taking it because of Depakote - she was just switched from Tegretol

to Depakote. Anyway - I'm very interested in this as well.

Dr McCandless and others,

I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the following product:

A new supplement is featured in the Winter Edition of Life Extension

mag

which " grows " neurites (axons and dendrites). According to

them " Acetyl-l-carnitine

by itself stimulates neurite growth after 5 days by 5.6%.

Acetyl-l-carnitine-arginate on the other hand, stimulates neurite

outgrowth in the same time

period by *19.5% " .

The rest of the write up is at

http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2004/dec2004_supp_acetyl_01.htm

I remember that Boyd Haley said that mercury causes truncated

dendrites and

most of the kids need carnitine anyway, so I was wondering if a trial

of this supplement might be warranted.

My son never tolerated any other form of l-carnitine even though he

is significantly deficient. We finally " punted " and went with a

homeopathic version. I'm not sure if that has had any effect because

he still has low tone.

I called Life Extension this morning and talked to an " advisor " . He

suggested that my son may not be able to acetylate the carnitine.

Other than that he didn't have any advice for me other than what I

could read for myself in the article. I think I kind of gave him

pause when I asked if anyone had given consideration to the use of

this product in autism.

Thanks,

Vicki

I found that Pure Encapsulations also makes a version of acetyl-l-

carnitine-arginate. I can buy it for half the cost at Emerson

Ecologics. Their version only contains acetyl-l-carnitine-arginate

wheras the LE version contains both acetyl-l-carnitine and acetyl-l-

carnitine-arginate. The Pure Encapsulations bottle also says it

helps with erectile function, which I may have a hard time explaining

to his Dad.

I may do a trial of this, especially since he needs the carnitine but

has such a difficult time with the other types. Carnitor made him

walk down the hall dragging his head against the wall which is not a

usual behavior. When we did Bioset they also said that he was

EXTREMELY sensitive to l-carnitine. They weren't even able to treat

him for the sensitivity. I've tried to look into how carnitine is

utilized in the body in order to try to solve the puzzle of why he

does so poorly on it, but for some reason I have only found very

limited information.

I'll post again to let everyone knows how he does on this product.

A recent study of l-carnitine in ADHD kids suggested that taking

riboflavin (B2) with l-carnitine will help with the smell.

> Vicki,

> What causes the fishy smell? Neathery has smelled like this before

and I'm noticing it again. I think it's related to the Carnitor - not

sure - just a hunch. I also had to decrease her dosage because of

hyperactivity - but, I can't believe the words she saying. And - she

seems to understand her school work better and quicker. I'm just so

sorry that your son is doing poorly with the carnitine since he needs

it. We also use Pantethine to help with fat metabolism. I know that

our drug handout for Carnitor said that it can cause seizures. Has he

ever had an EEG?

-Just wanted to comment that my daughter has been on Carnitor for at

least 6 months and the " fishy " smell stopped about 2 months ago.

She is on 2 tabs three times a day and still no smell. (330mg tabs)
