Guest guest
Hello, I am only replying as no-one else did, I haven't treated anyone like this but had a similar problem with one of my own babies, thrush going right from mouth to anus and even penis. What I did was made infusions of thyme and an astringent, I am sure it was Rubus and put them in a spray bottle, you know one of those plastic thingies and sprayed directly into his mouth. He was four months, so I could also feed him live youghurt, I used to mix a bit of bifida bacteria through it and rub it round his mouth. That is the one for infants, you can buy it in a powder for them, I think I got it from Higher nature. Anyway, it cleared in no time at all, within days and it was pretty bad. I am not sure, but I think babies' guts are sterile at birth, and that is why candida can get a grip so easily, but it seems straight forward to sort out. What I have noticed about nursing and nursers is that the lack of energy drives one to want croissants and coffee all day and night, cheap carbs and plenty of them, so that might be a problem. Plenty good quality proteins often helps (hoummus for example is ideal). The usual things to help her gut would probly help, is that why you are wondering about passage in the breastmilk, to treat baby or to just stop with mother? I know that to be sequestered into breast milk a molecule must be lipid soluble and very small, so volatile oils will go. But what happens once in the baby's digestive system hasn't really been established- theirs is quite different. Also alkaloids do pass in the milk, but I think infants cannot absorb them (true at least for morphine and nicotine). And sulphur molecules pass (garlic, onions). My feeling about the nipple thing is that they are already taking a battering, so I don't like the idea of tinctures directly. And creams are not ideal as baby will get the residues. Spray bottles are again extremely handy as there is no messing, what about cool boiled water with a few drops of lavendar shaken before application? Also something healing if there is concurrent cracking. Then again Russian women dip nipples in vodka to toughen them up... And of course keeping them as dry as possible between feeds and as much exposure to fresh air as decency will permit! I don't think she will have a problem once the baby is sorted anyway. Hope something there helps, NÃamh Thrush in mother and baby
Guest guest
Hi when I used to make strong calendula ointment, made in a base of sunflower oil and beeswax (with just a touch of benzoin tincture for preservative), a midwife who passed throught the area on holiday every year used to stock up tp give to her breastfeeding mothers if they had sore nipples. when my first daughter had thrush in the mouth, as a young enthusiastic student in the days before we convinced ourselves that herbs were mortally dangerous, I mixed a little hydrastis powder with honey, yum! (no really) and put a little on the white patches in her mouth. It cleared up on one application. ( I may have also applied it and/or marigold ointment to myself, but I don't remember now). (she's 30 the day after tomorrow, so I think I can be forgiven the memory lapse) Sally Mid Wales On Friday, September 17, 2004, at 03:57 PM, anglgrun@... wrote: > Dear all, > I would like some advice regarding a patient who is coming to see me on > Monday. > Mother of a 6 week old baby, she experiences intense pain after > breastfeeding > the baby, pain onset is 5-10 minutes after the feed, and her nipple > goes > white for a few minutes after the feed. Guest guest
Hi , try plain calendula cream fot the nipples after each feed, I would not worry about the residue as it will actually help with the baby thrush. Where does the mother experience the pain, is it the nipple or the breast? Suggest breasfeeding on both breasts at each feed (less battering for each nipple), requires gentle unlatching of a baby by means of inserting a finger between baby's mouth and the breast. Also there may be some degree of stenosis in one of the milk ducts. Hope it helps Newton anglgrun@... wrote: Dear all, I would like some advice regarding a patient who is coming to see me on Monday. Mother of a 6 week old baby, she experiences intense pain after breastfeeding the baby, pain onset is 5-10 minutes after the feed, and her nipple goes white for a few minutes after the feed. There is no discharge from the nipple. The GP and Breastfeeding Counsellors think it is thrush. The baby has been diagnosed with thrush in the mouth. The problem started about 2 weeks ago. Treatment so far has been Daktarin Gel for the baby, Daktarin cream and Fluconazole orally (10 day course, has taken it for 7 days with no effect) for the mother. I found recipe for baby's oral thrush in A McIntyres books (calendula tincture with 1 drop per 20 ml tincture of thyme or oregano essential oil; yoghurt to wipe around the mouth). My question is: what herbs are safe to give to the mother, considering passing through the breast milk to the baby? how is the tincture/essential oil mix administered to the baby (wiping round with soaked cloth?)? Any other advice regarding diet or the breastfeeding itself? Any advice regarding diagnosis? I would be very grateful for any help at all! Thanks, Grunwald Preston, Lancs
Guest guest
Hi , I would also suggest mum drinks calendula tea (little and often so it passes through in milk), washes nipples in same tea, plus baths with calendula infusion for mum and baby - Also check mum is drinking enough water.. Good luck Jean Re: Thrush in mother and baby Hi when I used to make strong calendula ointment, made in a base of sunflower oil and beeswax (with just a touch of benzoin tincture for preservative), a midwife who passed throught the area on holiday every year used to stock up tp give to her breastfeeding mothers if they had sore nipples. when my first daughter had thrush in the mouth, as a young enthusiastic student in the days before we convinced ourselves that herbs were mortally dangerous, I mixed a little hydrastis powder with honey, yum! Guest guest
Thanks for all the advice and help! The mother did not come to see me after all, she wanted to try a treatment from her GP first, but may come back if that doesn't help. Thanks!!!
