A survey done in 1997 showed that 43 percent of U.S. adults use the Internet to seek health information. Another study, in 1996, showed that patients would like to have information from their own doctors available to them via the Internet. One article reported that some patients at the University of Virginia and University College London found email consultations with their doctors less intimidating than face-to-face contact. However, one author cautioned that, " email in the medical context not only generates liability concerns but also raises serious questions about privacy, confidentiality, authenticity of authorship and patient consent.
