Elaine,

I snipped so I don't know if I really said "America is bad." I better explain...I am trying to say your life is what you make it WHEREVER you are...there are problems everywhere - even our country.

I was actually trying to cheer you up...and so sorry I got on a diatribe...must be the teacher in me...

To answer someone's question as to why people are flooding into the US - the American dollar.

I don't think American is bad, I think it's the greatest country in the world.HOWEVER........I agree with much of what Beth said. There is so muchthat could be improved in this country and I think it's really goingdownhill. We have to be aware of it so that we can turn that aroundand keep us at the top. A good place to start is probably the schoolsystems. There is so much to be changed. Staying the best in theworld is important and if we let things continue in the direction theyare going, we will be in trouble, I believe.Elaine>>> Beth,>> Please take this in the gentle, compassionate spirit in which it is truly> presented: If America is SOOOOO BAD, why are we (as a country) discussing a> flood of people so desparate to live here that they risk all they have,> imprisonment, and even death to come here? Oh, no! E-mail can be so difficult at times. I wasn't replying to

what you said, Beth! I was agreeing with you. I said that at the

beginning of the second paragraph. What I wrote was motivated by

Karl's response to your message (now Karl, don't take this wrong. I

didn't feel you had said anything wrong. I just wanted to throw in my

view).

Talk is cheap. Use Yahoo! Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Great rates starting at 1¢/min.

Karl, Even though this was meant for Beth, it is posted in a public forum, so I will feel free to respond. Having read Beth's postings and commented upon them, I did not read anything about soooo BAD. One of the earmarks of loving this country is loving it enough to not want its people to move in bad directions. One of our greatest freedoms is the freedom not to agree with everything the government says, to be able to voice an opinion when we see something we feel needs fixing. I get so frustrated when wanting things to be better is equated with not being patriotic. I love this country, and believe it is a blessing to live here, but I uphold my, Beth's and anyone else;s right to voice concerns .If we have the problem of a flood of people desparate to live here, and I agree that we do, could this not be a commentary on the state of the world, rather than a testimony to our perfection? Don't be sad...don't trade your simple life for a chase after fortune...the great American business world does not care about the world, only money. America is polluted and corrupt...all the way to the top. Stay in a clean envirnonment...stay healthy and please don't let materialism change you. The American dollar isn't worth the trade - Do you know that Americans work longer hours than ANY other developed nation...and we have less vacation. American Companies are more concerned with Wall Street than Main Street. Chemical pollution is killing kids...Cancer is epidemic. When I began teaching school in 1976...I could put a box of kleenex on my desk and it lasted 6 months! When I retired last year a box of kleenex lasted only a week at best...and I had kids with inhalers...on ADD meds...anti-depressants...and two kids with leukemia just last year. I've had 5 in all die since 1985...and one that had a colostomy. Several suicide attempts. And no one cares...the schools just test, test, test...because "No Child Left Behind" does just the opposite of what is says. It leaves kids behind...and if they are good in something like music, art, or physical education...it doesn't count...Gifted Programs are being dropped from school districts because school budgets are STRANGLED for money...and the money they get in Texas is from property taxes...and that strangles the homeowner. In Texas, you can NEVER own a home, because you will always have this BIG property tax...which on an 85K house is around 2 hundred extra dollars a month. Something is not right in this country...if we are so smart, so rich, and so good...why do we allow American citizens to live and die this way. My husband has NO medical insurance...because he owned his own company and it went belly-up...so for him to have insurance it would cost us $350 a month....I have a minimal policy that doesn't kick in until $5K of my own money is paid out. So we don't go to the doctor...at all. We buy meds in Mexico and diagnose ourselves via the internet and my husband's son, who is a physician's assistant. Oh my gosh, now I'm sad!!!!!

In spite of all this...I would LOVE to adopt you!!!! Beth
