Guest guest
Hi, a pt who I've been treating for a couple of years has recently had a Mirena coil fitted, the aim being to reduce her menorrhagia and resultant anaemia and low ferritin. The menorrhagia was only one of the reasons she has been seeing me and although we'd made some headway with herbs, supplements and dietary measures- her anaemia was still causing extreme tiredness. Her Rx contains Hypericum, which has helped considerably with her mood. As the Mirena coil is not being used for contraceptive purposes (her husband has had a vasectomy), is it okay to continue to keep this in her Rx? She is also using Vitex 1:1, 10 gtt mane. I suggested a break from this recently (before the coil was fitted) with the result that her PMS was horrendous and menorrhagia returned to original severity. The pt is reluctant to stop the Vitex given what happened last time, but I'm unsure of the implications of using this herb with a progestogen only coil. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
