Guest guest
My son currently takes l-carnitine twice a day to help with hypotonia and low energy issues. To help with the absorption of fats, should I give it instead with meals? Thank you,
Guest guest
No, aminos all do better on a empty stomach if your child can tolerate it that way. Guest guest
The literature says amino acids will be about 20% less effective if given with food, as the body will take the food first. I often end up giving L-carnitine with food as there are not enough hours in the day to keep giving everything on an empty stomach. However, on the customized amino acid powder, I do think it is so important and so expensive that you should do that twice daily on an empty stomach. Guest guest
Addendum: This need for carnitine for proper fat absorption into the mitochondria is a chemical pathway that needs carnitine to be there all the time, not just at the time you eat fats the way we use enzymes to help break them down. It is a different mechanism. Dr JM: l-carnitine question > > > > > > > > > > > > > > My son currently takes l-carnitine twice a day to help with > hypotonia > > > and low energy issues. Guest guest
Dr.Mccandless, Thanks a lot for the explanation, it helps to understand that carnitine needs to be there all the time and it should not be treated as enzymes. So, would I be correct in assuming that it would be best to give small dosages of carnitine through out the day, if possible??? and if so then how critical is it to give pantothenic acid with it at every dose???
